Eric Hamber
Eric Werge Hamber (1879–1960) was a Canadian businessman and the 15th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Early life Born on April 21, 1879, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as a youth he was an excellent athlete who shone in his school rowing, rugby, football, and hockey teams. His first job was as a junior clerk with The Dominion Bank, and he moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, to open a new branch in 1907. On May 14, 1912, he married Aldyen Hendry and began work at the BC Mills Timber and Trading Company, a company owned by Aldyen's father John Hendry. Hamber later became the company's president. In 1934 he built the Tudor Revival style, Minnekhada Lodge, in Coquitlam as a country retreat and hunting lodge. The land is now managed by Metro Vancouver Parks. Public office On May 1, 1936, he became Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, achieving considerable popularity. Jan Hamber
Jan Hamber ( Armstrong) is an American ornithologist and conservationist. While working at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History in the 1970s, she became involved in the effort to save the California condor, and has been credited with playing a major role in the condor's survival in the wild. Hamber was the biologist who tracked the last known California condor in the wild, placing the phone call that led to its capture at the beginning of the successful captive breeding program that saved condors from becoming extinct. Early life and education Jan Armstrong was born in New Jersey and grew up in New York City, where her father taught agriculture at a high school. She developed an early interest in birding. Hamber attended Cornell University, where she took a class in ornithology taught by Professor Arthur Allen, and went on to major in botany. Eric Hamber Secondary School is a public secondary school located in the South Cambie neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Eric Hamber is a comprehensive secondary school with approximately 1400 students. Each year, approximately 70% of the senior class graduate with honours standing. The school is named after Eric Hamber, former Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. The school colours, maroon and light blue, were the colours used by Eric Hamber's race horses.
