HackNY
hackNY is a New York City-based initiative seeking "to create and empower a community of student-technologists." hackNY was created in 2010 by Evan Korth, Hilary Mason, and Chris Wiggins. The organization is organized by faculty at both New York University and Columbia University. hackNY holds semiannual, 24-hour "hackathons," and runs a summer Fellows Program which pairs students in the computational sciences with local startup companies. Each semester, hackNY holds a 24-hour coding marathon, or "hackathon," often at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, but in Spring 2013 at Columbia's Engineering School. The events are open to all students, not just of Columbia and NYU. The hackathons begin with brief presentations from startups that make their APIs available to the participants. Chris Wiggins is an associate professor of applied mathematics at Columbia University. In 2010 he co-founded hackNY, a nonprofit organization focused on connecting students with startups in New York City. Hilary Mason (data Scientist)
Hilary Mason is an American entrepreneur and data scientist. She is the co-founder of the startup Fast Forward Labs. Early life and education Mason was born in New York City, and graduated from Grinnell College with a B.A. in computer science in 2000, and attended Brown University. Career In 2010, she co-founded HackNY, a non-profit that helps integrate engineering students into the startup community in New York City. After few years working as Chief Scientist at bitly, she quits the company in 2014 and co-founds Fast Forward Labs with Micha Gorelick, an other former bitly data scientist. A hackathon (also known as a hack day, hackfest, datathon or codefest; a portmanteau of hacking and marathon) is an event where people engage in rapid and collaborative engineering over a relatively short period of time such as 24 or 48 hours. They are often run using agile software development practices, such as sprint-like design wherein computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, product managers, project managers, domain experts, and others collaborate intensively on engineering projects, such as software engineering.
