The discography for the Minutemen, an American punk rock band, includes four studio albums, eight extended plays, one live album and seven compilations. Formed in 1980 by guitarist D. Boon and bassist Mike Watt, the Minutemen signed to the Californian independent record label SST Records at their second concert. Their first extended play, ''Paranoid Time'', appeared later that year, followed by the '' Joy'' EP (on their own label, New Alliance Records) and their first studio album, '' The Punch Line''. The Minutemen continued to release new material throughout 1982 and 1983 to a mostly local audience. In 1984, the band released '' Double Nickels on the Dime'', their only double album and best-selling release. They continued to release more material, including the commercially oriented '' Project: Mersh'' and ''3-Way Tie (For Last)'', until Boon's untimely death in December 1985. Following the band's breakup, SST Records purchased New Alliance and reissued a number of recordings o ...

Minutemen (band)
Minutemen were an American punk rock band formed in San Pedro, California, in 1980. Composed of guitarist/vocalist D. Boon, bassist/vocalist Mike Watt, and drummer George Hurley, Minutemen recorded four albums and eight EPs before Boon's death in an automobile accident in 1985; the band broke up shortly thereafter. They were noted in the California punk community for a philosophy of "jamming econo"—a sense of thriftiness reflected in their touring and short, tight songs as well as their eclectic style drawing on hardcore punk, funk, jazz, and other sources. History Formation Minutemen began when D. Boon and Mike Watt met at age 13. Watt was walking through a park in their hometown of San Pedro, California when Boon, playing a game of "army" with other boys, fell out of a tree right next to him and found that his friends, one named Eskimo, must have ditched him. Both boys shared a passion for music; Boon's mother taught D. to play the guitar and suggested Watt learn to ...

Minuteflag
''Minuteflag'' was an experimental jam band collaboration between members of the American punk bands Minutemen and Black Flag. Their only release, an EP, consists entirely of instrumentals with the exception of "Fetch the Water" which features D. Boon on lead vocals. Recording took place in March 1985, while Black Flag was in the process of writing and recording '' Loose Nut'' at Total Access Studio in Redondo Beach, CA; Minutemen had just completed their '' Project: Mersh'' 12" EP at the same studio the month before. The members involved initially agreed that the material recorded during the Minuteflag sessions would not be released until at least one of the bands had disbanded. A 12" EP on SST Records as SST 050 came out over a year afterward, by which time Minutemen had disbanded after the car crash death of guitarist/vocalist D. Boon; Black Flag themselves would split up later in 1986. Track listing #"Fetch the Water" – 3:49 #"Power Failure" – 3:43 #"Friends" – ...

Forced Exposure
''Forced Exposure'' was an independent music magazine founded by Jimmy Johnson and Katie The Kleening Lady (Goldman) (zine). It was published sporadically out of Boston from 1982 to 1993, edited by Jimmy Johnson and Byron Coley. It was printed on cheap newsprint with plain design and filled with corrosive yet humorous writing. The first issue featured Boston Hardcore band SS Decontrol on the cover. While there were articles and reviews of various counter-culture figures in literature ( Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, Philip K. Dick) and film (Richard Kern, Nick Zedd), the primary focus was independent, punk, and obscure music. The tone was often sarcastic, confrontational and highly opinionated. Coley in particular wrote in a vernacular that was influential on subsequent rock journalism. The list of contributors and interviewees reads like a who's who of underground music from the time: Steve Albini, Mission of Burma, Sonic Youth, Lydia Lunch, Chris D. Chris D. ( ...

Reflex Records
Reflex Records was an American independent record label formed by the members of hardcore punk band Hüsker Dü and Terry Katzman. It was formed to help promote independent bands, after Twin/Tone Records rejected Hüsker Dü's first single in 1979. (Bassist Greg Norton told ''Rolling Stone'' in 2017 that the label was named after their experience with Twin/Tone: “We named our label Reflex Records because that was our reflex to being rejected.”) The label was funded by a loan from Hüsker drummer Grant Hart's mother's credit union. Under Katzman's guidance, the label would also release several compilations of regional underground and alternative bands, as well as albums by local post-punk bands Rifle Sport, Man Sized Action, Otto's Chemical Lounge, and Articles of Faith, as well as the Minutemen's 1985 EP ''Tour-Spiel''. Both Katzman and the Hüsker Dü members became too busy with other projects, and the label quietly folded in 1985. In 2008, Hart revived the Reflex nam ...

''Tour-Spiel'' is an EP by Minutemen, released in 1985. It contains four songs, all covers. A studio version of track 1 appears on ''Double Nickels on the Dime''. Studio versions of "Lost" and "The Red and The Black", with different musical arrangements, appear on '' 3-Way Tie (For Last)''. The songs were recorded in the studio of a Tucson radio station. Buzz Or Howl Under The Influence Of Heat
''Buzz or Howl Under the Influence of Heat'' is the sixth overall release (fourth extended play, or EP, release and their first 12-inch EP) from American hardcore punk band Minutemen. It was released by SST Records in 1983. It is noted for featuring tracks with greater depth and more conventional song structure than on the band's previous releases. Background The EP was recorded rather cheaply even by Minutemen standards; the cost was $50. Most of the songs were cut live to two-track tape at Total Access Studio in Redondo Beach, CA, as opposed to using a multi-track tape recorder, with longtime SST Records staff producer Spot behind the mixing board. Spot had suggested the live-to-two-track approach after Minutemen queried about the possibility of recording a new EP on four-channel multi-track tape, rather than the 16-track recordings the band had done in the past. This meant that most of the songs on ''Buzz or Howl...'' were recorded without any overdubs. The exceptions were the ...

Bean-Spill
''Bean-Spill'' is the third extended-play single and fourth release overall by American hardcore punk band Minutemen. Background The Minutemen's second LP, '' What Makes a Man Start Fires?'', was recorded in the summer of 1982 but the release was delayed due to SST's lawsuit with Unicorn Records. To fill the lengthy gap between releases, SST Records partner Joe Carducci volunteered to release an EP on his Thermidor Records label. Recorded in two sessions with side A recorded at Media Art in Hermosa Beach with Spot and side B recorded in November 1981 at Casbah Studio in Fullerton, CA. The latter session also saw the recording of what became the first seven tracks of ''The Politics of Time''. The EP includes two of the band's most enduring early numbers, "Split Red" and "If Reagan Played Disco." ''Bean-Spill'' is notable for being the only Minutemen record to feature bassist Mike Watt, rather than guitarist D. Boon as the lead vocalist on most of the songs. Boon only sings on ...

What Makes A Man Start Fires?
''What Makes a Man Start Fires?'' is the second full-length album and fifth release overall by American punk rock band Minutemen. Background At almost twice the length of their previous album, ''The Punch Line'', the Minutemen's songs began surpassing the two-minute mark. Breaking another Minutemen record, the band took the longest time they took to date to record ''What Makes A Man Start Fires?''. The basic tracks were recorded in one late-night session, but then the band held two separate late-night sessions for guitar and vocal overdubs. Watt has said that he considers this to be Minutemen's "first real album." While the songwriting credits are shared among all three Minutemen, all of the music for the album was composed exclusively by bassist Mike Watt; the bass-centered origins of the songs is especially apparent on such tracks as "Bob Dylan Wrote Propaganda Songs", "Sell Or Be Sold", and "The Anchor". All three members contributed lyrics. Also for the first time on a Mi ...

We Jam Econo
''We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen'', is a full-length documentary about the influential 1980s punk rock band Minutemen, created by director Tim Irwin and producer Keith Schieron in association with Rocket Fuel Films. The film premiered on February 25, 2005 at the historic Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California, after two years in production. Synopsis Poignant recent interviews with the band's two surviving members Mike Watt and George Hurley, as well as first-person anecdotes from notable musicians including Ian MacKaye, Flea, Henry Rollins and Thurston Moore, complement the archival concert and interview footage of the band. Development As fans of the band, director Tim Irwin and producer Keith Schieron had discussed making a documentary about Minutemen since they were in high school, around 1989. The two approached Mike Watt who gave the project a thumbs up and that inspired them to start calling and emailing potential interviewees. The title is a lyric from ...

Introducing The Minutemen
''Introducing the Minutemen'' is a retrospective and relatively comprehensive compilation of songs by influential punk/alternative trio the Minutemen, compiled by bassist and notable solo artist Mike Watt twelve years after the untimely demise of the band. The album is made up of tracks spanning the band's entire career, sampling tracks from all of their studio releases with the exception of the ''Tour-Spiel'' EP and the Black Flag-Minutemen collaboration ''Minuteflag''. Due to the comprehensive and wide-spanning nature of the collection, it is generally perceived to be an effective introduction to The Minutemen and their music. The band's landmark breakthrough ''Double Nickels on the Dime'' donates the most tracks, with seven. The three-song ''Joy'' EP and the rarities collection ''The Politics of Time'' both contribute a mere two tracks. Track listing Personnel ;Minutemen *D.
