Guided Reading
Guided reading is "small-group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency". The small group model allows students to be taught in a way that is intended to be more focused on their specific needs, accelerating their progress. Introduction Guided reading was introduced as a method of teaching reading in England and Wales in 1993, through the influence of the National Literacy Strategy (later superseded by the Primary National Strategy). It is no longer supported by the Primary National Strategy from England's Department for Education. In the United States, Guided Reading is a key component to the Reading Workshop model of literacy instruction. Guided Reading sessions involve a teacher and a small group, ideally of two to four children although groups of five or six are not uncommon. Gay Su Pinnell
Gay Su Pinnell (born June 28, 1944) is an American educational theorist and a professor emerita at the School of Teaching and Learning at Ohio State University. She is best known for her work with Irene Fountas on literacy and guided reading a whole language teaching framework which layed the groundwork for the Fountas and Pinnell reading levels. Education Pinnell's parents were educators in Portales, New Mexico and Pinnell has an undergraduate degree from Eastern New Mexico University. In 1975, Pinnell earned her Ph.D. from Ohio State University where she worked on language in first grade students. In 2018, Lesley University awarded Pinnell an honorary doctorate to recognize her contributions to childhood literacy. Balanced Literacy
Balanced literacy is a theory of teaching reading and writing that arose in the 1990s and has a variety of interpretations. For some, balanced literacy strikes a balance between whole language and phonics and puts an end to the so called ''reading wars''. Others say balanced literacy in practice usually means the ''whole language'' approach to reading. Some proponents of balanced literacy say it uses research-based elements of comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonemic awareness and phonics and includes instruction in a combination of the whole group, small group and 1:1 instruction in reading, writing, speaking and listening with the strongest research-based elements of each. Independent reading is a term used in educational settings, where students are involved in choosing and reading material (fiction books, non-fiction, magazine, other media) for their independent consumption and enjoyment. Reading is the process of taking in the sense or meaning of letters, symbols, etc., especially by sight or touch. Phonics
Phonics is a method for teaching people how to read and write an alphabetic language (such as English, Arabic or Russian). It is done by demonstrating the relationship between the sounds of the spoken language (phonemes), and the letters or groups of letters (graphemes) or syllables of the written language. Shared Reading
Shared reading is an instructional approach in which the teacher explicitly models the strategies and skills of proficient readers. In the first chapter of the shared reading guide for classroom teachers Read It Again!Brenda Parks asks, "What is Shared Reading?" She then answers the question by writing, "Shared reading is a collaborative learning activity, based on research by Don Holdaway (1979), that emulates and builds from the child's experience with bedtime stories." Whole Language
Whole language is a philosophy of reading and a discredited educational method originally developed for teaching literacy in English to young children.
