The governor of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug (russian: Губернатор Чукотского автономного округа) is the chief executive of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Chukotka, an autonomous region in the Russian Far East. History of office On 11 November 1991 Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Council of Deputies of Chukotka Aleksandr Nazarov was appointed Head of Administration of the autonomy by Russian president Boris Yeltsin. During Nazarov administration, there was a sharp decline in industrial production, most of the miner settlements were liquidated. The population of Chukotka decreased from nearly 164,000 people in 1989 to 54,000 in 2002. Roman Valentinovich Kopin (russian: Роман Валентинович Копин; born 5 March 1974) is the Governor of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. He succeeded Roman Abramovich in July 2008. Early life and education Kopin was born in Kostroma, Kostroma Oblast, on 5 March 1974. In 1996, he graduated from Volgo-Vyatskaya Academy. He majored in state and municipal governing. Political career In 1994, Kopin began his political career as the deputy director of the Nizhniy Novgorod Regional Center for Youth Initiatives. In 1995, he was an inspector in the legal department. 2018 Gubernatorial elections in Russia were held in 26 federal subjects of Russia. 22 federal subjects had direct elections and 4 federal subjects had indirect elections of governors.
