Football In The Northern Mariana Islands
The sport of association football in the country of the Northern Mariana Islands is run by the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association. The association administers the men's national football team, the women's national football team, youth national teams of both genders, as well as the Men's Championship and Women's Championship. History Evidence of early football on the islands is scattered, but there is evidence that a representative team withdrew from the 1983 South Pacific Games. To date they have never competed in the Football at the Pacific Games in either gender. These early days were under the Northern Mariana Islands Soccer Federation or NMISF, with their first, confirmed international action coming in 1998, at the 1998 Micronesian Games. The Marianas Soccer League is the men's top level professional football competition of the Northern Mariana Islands Football Association. Asian Football Confederation
The Asian Football Confederation is the governing body of association football, beach soccer, and futsal in some countries/territories in Asia and Oceania. It has 47 member countries most of which are located in Asia. Australia, formerly in Oceania Football Confederation, OFC, joined AFC in 2006. Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, both Territories of the United States, territories of the United States, are also AFC members that are geographically in Oceania. The Asian Ladies Football Confederation (ALFC) was the section of AFC who managed women's association football in Asia. Guam National Football Team
The Guam national football team represents Guam, overseas territory of the United States in international football and is controlled by the Guam Football Association. They are affiliated with the Asian Football Confederation's East Asian Football Federation region. Guam reached its highest ever position in the FIFA World Ranking at 146 in 2015 after victories over Turkmenistan and India. History Beginnings Football in Guam began in the 1960s, on the initiative of two pioneers: an Irish priest, Tony Gillespie, and an owner of a construction company, Charles Whang, who settled in Guam and created the Guam Soccer Cup before becoming the first president of the Guam Football Association in 1975. The East Asian Football Federation (EAFF), founded on 28 May 2002, is an international governing body of association football in East Asia. The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) is one of the six continental confederations of international association football. The OFC has 13 members, 11 of which are full members and two which are associate members not affiliated with FIFA. It promotes the game in Oceania and allows the List of men's national association football teams#OFC (Oceania), member nations to qualify for the FIFA World Cup. OFC is predominantly made up of island nations where association football is not the most popular sport, with low GDP and low population meaning very little money is generated by the OFC nations.
