Fencing At The 2016 Summer Olympics
The fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 14 August at the Carioca Arena 3 inside the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca. Around 212 fencers (an equal distribution between men and women; of which, eight fencers came from the host nation Brazil) competed in 10 events -- six individual and four team. Similar to 2008 and 2012, the International Fencing Federation maintained the format of ten events with a rotation system for team events. As a result, the men's team sabre and the women's team foil were dropped from the program only at these Games. Qualification Qualification was primarily based on the FIE official rankings as of 4 April 2016, with further individual places available at four zonal qualifying tournaments. Carioca Arena 3
Carioca Arena 3 (Portuguese: ''Arena Carioca 3'') is an indoor stadium in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The venue hosted taekwondo at the 2016 Summer Olympics, taekwondo and fencing at the 2016 Summer Olympics, fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics and the judo at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, judo and Wheelchair fencing at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, wheelchair fencing competitions at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. Carioca Arena 3 was planned to be transformed into a sports high school after the Games. During the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, the structure of Carioca Arena 3 was used as a base for the health workers on vaccination programme. As of February 2022, the Arena is open for children engaged in sports activities promoted by the prefecture of Rio de Janeiro. Paolo Pizzo
Paolo Pizzo (born 4 April 1983) is an Italian right-handed épée fencer, two-time individual world champion, two-time Olympian, and 2016 team Olympic silver medalist. Biography In 1996, when Paolo Pizzo was 13, he was diagnosed with head cancer that forced him to abandon the sport, then came slow rehabilitation until his first victory came in 2009. Pizzo competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games and the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, where he won a silver medal in the team men's épée event. Marco Fichera
Marco Fichera (born 15 April 1993) is an Italian male épée fencer. Career Fichera took up fencing when he was ten years old under the guidance of maestro Domenico Patti at C.S. Acireale. In 2010 he took a double gold haul at the U17 European Championships and an individual silver and a team gold at the U21 European Championships. The same year he took part in the inaugural edition of the Summer Youth Olympics. In the individual event he won the gold medal after being led 9–14 in the final by Germany's Nikolaus Bodoczi. He also earned gold in the mixed team event. These results caused him to be selected into Fiamme Oro, the sports group of the Italian police. Enrico Garozzo (; born 21 June 1989 in Catania, Sicily) is an Italian right-handed épée fencer and 2016 Olympic silver medalist. Garozzo is an athlete of the Centro Sportivo Carabinieri. Biography Garozzo won a silver medal at the 2006 Cadets World Fencing Championship in Taebaek, then took the gold at the 2008 Junior World Fencing Championship in his childhood city Acireale. Daniel Jérent (born 4 June 1991) is a French Épée fencer, team world champion in 2014. He was banned from the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo due to a positive urine test for a banned product, after he had otherwise qualified to fence in the individual and team epee events at the Olympics. Career Jérent was born in Guadeloupe, and learnt fencing in Pointe-Noire before joining the centre for promising young fencers in Reims and transferring to Lagardère Paris Racing. He earned a team gold medal at the 2008 Cadets European Championships in Rovigo, and a team bronze medal at the 2011 Junior World Championships at the Dead Sea. Yannick Borel (born 5 November 1988) is a French right-handed épée fencer. Borel is a two-time team European champion, four-time individual European champion, four-time team world champion, and 2018 individual world champion. A three-time Olympian, Borel is a 2016 team Olympic champion. Borel competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. Grumier is a three-time team European champion, 2015 individual European champion, and five-time team world champion. A two-time Olympian, Grumier is a 2016 team Olympic champion and 2016 individual Olympic bronze medalist. Career Grumier won the gold medal in the épée team event at the 2006 World Fencing Championships after beating Spain in the final.
