Exploito
Exploito is a term generally given to describe cover version or sound-alike recordings that capitalize on the official recordings of artists. Typically they are of the budget release type of album. Often the buying public would think they are buying an album by the actual artist. Background The typical exploito album is aimed at the unsuspecting buyer with the attraction of a budget price. In the United States, Alshire was one label that released this type of album. In Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the label there was Arc. The current hits of the day would be recorded. Sometimes local musicians would be used. Also some extra original compositions would be added by hired writers or people that worked for the label. One example of how an exploito album imitates a genuine release is the '' Mark, Don & Terry'' album which has the layout and cover art and design copies a recent release of a legitimate album. Stereo Gold Award
Stereo Gold Award was a budget label record label owned by producer Dave Miller. It released many budget and exploito type recordings during the 1970s. It was one of the last of Muller's major business ventures. Background The label was a U.K. based label, and owned by Miller who also owned Distribution Direct. The parent company was Damont Records. The records were distributed in the U.K. by Record Merchandisers. It was announced in the August 8, 1970 edition of ''Billboard'' that the label was to be launched in mid September of that year by the U.K. Rack Consortium. The records were to be priced at $1.50 each and were to be manufactured by PYE which was a partner in the consortium. Most of the material would be sourced from the U.S. based Damill catalogue. Budget Album
Budget albums (also known as unofficially by some collectors as either drugstore records or junk records) were low-priced vinyl LPs of popular and classical music released during the 1950s to 1970s consisting either of previously released material (usually reissues drawn from the catalogs of major labels featuring older performances by well-known artists) or material recorded especially for the line (often cover versions of hit songs by name artists sung or performed on these albums by usually unidentified and unknown musicians). Prices ranged from as low as 59 U.S. cents (minor label releases of the 1950s) to $2.98 (major label repackaging of older material in the 1970s). Eric Bell
Eric Robin Bell (born 3 September 1947 in Belfast, Northern Ireland) is a Northern Irish rock and blues musician, best known as a founding member and the original guitarist of the rock group Thin Lizzy from 1969 to 1973. After his time in Thin Lizzy, he briefly fronted his own group before joining The Noel Redding Band in the mid-1970s. Patricia Ann Collins (May 7, 1935 – May 31, 1997) was an Americans, American hypnosis, hypnotist. Early life Collins was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 7, 1935. She spent most of her childhood in orphanages and foster homes. Career Collins mentioned in interviews that hypnosis helped her recover from a mental breakdown, nervous breakdown. She later studied the art and came up with a nightclub act in which she would hypnotize volunteers from the audience. She owned a nightclub on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Hollywood, where she would perform her act, as well as use hypnosis for therapeutic purposes. Bob Hafner
Robert Hafner (April 8, 1932 – October 12, 2013) was an American record producer and songwriter who, along with Tony Hilder, was responsible for many of the surf records that came out in California in the 1960s including "Vesuvius" and "Intoxica" by The Revels. He also contributed to the music for the film '' The Exiles''. Music historian and author Robert Dalley said that he had a definite place in surf history. Personal life Hafner was born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania in 1932. In 1939 the Hafner family moved to Los Angeles. Anthony J. Hilder (1935 - April 26, 2019) was an American author, film maker, talk show host, broadcaster, news correspondent and former actor. Tops Records
Tops Records was a Los Angeles-based record label owned by Tops Music Enterprises, both founded in 1947 by Carl L. Doshay and Sam Dickerman. After a prolific and profitable run, Tops merged with PRI Records in 1958, which in turn, sold to a group of investors in 1960, then went bankrupt in about 1962. Bob Blythe was a ball point pen manufacturer and owner of BB pens. Later he was president of a record company, Tops Records, as well as founder of budget record label Sutton Records. Background Blythe was a former vaudevillian who drove around in a yellow convertible. He would hire actors to work in his pen factory. BB Pens He partnered up with Jack Stein, a Los Angeles surgeon. They began the pen operation in Mrs. Stein's kitchen, but as a result of making a mess in the sink, they moved it to Stein's garage. Sutton Records
Sutton Records was a budget record label that was sold in outlets other than record shops. The outlets for Sutton were supermarkets, gas stations etc., would be serviced by rack jobbers. In addition to cover versions, the label issued recordings by The Ink Spots, Jesse Crawford and Jimmy Witherspoon. Background Sutton was founded by Bob Blythe, the former president of Tops Records. In 1963, the label began with 225 records in its catalogue. Some of the label catalogues that they sourced their recordings from were Music Craft, Omega and Tiara. One solo artist to have a record issued on the label was Jimmy Witherspoon with ''Stormy Monday And Other Blues By''.
