Electoral District Of Manly
Manly is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, and covers a large portion of the Northern Beaches Council local government area. Created in 1927, although it has historically tended to be a -leaning seat, Manly has had a history of independent local members. It is represented by James Griffin for the Liberal Party, and was previously represented by the former Premier of New South Wales, Mike Baird Michael Bruce Baird (born 1 April 1968) is an Australian investment banker and former politician who was the 44th Premier of New South Wales, the Minister for Infrastructure, the Minister for Western Sydney, and the Leader of the New South W .... Sydney ( ) is the capital city of the state of New South Wales, and the most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Alfred Reid (Australian Politician)
Alfred Albert Edward Ernest Theodore Muswellbrooke Orlando Vassa Reid (1867 – 5 August 1945), nicknamed Alphabet Reid, was an Australian politician. He was born in Penrith to Michael and Ann Clara Reid. He became a baker, and in 1898 married Mary Ann Robertson. He served on Penrith Municipal Council from 1895 to 1898 and was mayor in 1898, and after moving to Manly around 1907 served on Manly Council from 1915 and 1928 (mayor from 1919 to 1921). In 1920 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as one of the members for North Shore; he was initially an independent, but subsequently joined the Nationalist Party. He did not stand for election in 1922 and was re-elected in 1925. In 1927, when single-member electorates were re-introduced, he became the member for Manly. 1999 New South Wales State Election
Elections to the 52nd Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday, 27 March 1999. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and half the seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Labor Party, led by premier Bob Carr won a second term with a 7% swing against the Liberal Party and National Party, led by Kerry Chikarovski. 1991 New South Wales State Election
Elections to the 50th Parliament of New South Wales were held on Saturday 25 May 1991. All seats in the Legislative Assembly and half the seats in the Legislative Council were up for election. The Liberal-National Coalition government of Premier Nick Greiner, which enjoyed a considerable majority following their landslide win at the 1988 election, was seeking a second term in office against new Labor Opposition Leader Bob Carr. The government had reduced the number of lower house seats from 109 to 99 for the 1991 election, reversing an increase approved by the Unsworth Labor government. Peter Alexander Cameron Macdonald OAM (born. 29 May 1943) is an Australian medical practitioner and politician from Glasgow, Scotland. He was formerly the independent member for the Electoral district of Manly in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and Mayor of Manly Council. Career Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Macdonald was educated in Edinburgh, the University of London (MB, BS) and King's College Hospital. During this time, he was involved with the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) and joined the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, obtaining a Diploma in Anaesthetics (DA) and a Diploma in Obstetrics (DRCOG). Macdonald emigrated to Australia in 1972. He settled in Manly and worked as a general practitioner from 1973 to 2006. 1984 New South Wales State Election
Elections were held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 24 March 1984. The Labor government led by Neville Wran won a fourth term in office, though with a reduced (if still sizeable) majority and a 7% swing against it. As the two previous elections each saw the sitting Opposition Leader lose the election and failing to be elected to Parliament, the 1984 election saw Nick Greiner becoming the first Opposition Leader to lose an election and retain his seat since Pat Hills in 1974. Independents Ted Mack and John Hatton retained their seats of North Shore and South Coast respectively. They were joined on the cross benches by a third independent and Bruce Duncan. David Hay (Australian Politician)
David Aberdeen Hay, (born 26 October 1933) is a former Australian politician. He was the Liberal member for Manly in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1984 to 1991, and state Minister for Local Government and Minister for Planning from 1988 to 1991. Hay was born in Manly and was educated at Manly Boys' High School. He served in the military as a RAAF pilot, and worked as a company director. He was an Alderman of Manly Municipal Council for twenty-three years, including six terms as Mayor and eight as Deputy Mayor, and was also a Mackellar County Councillor for six years, including one year as chairman. In 1984, Hay defeated the Labor member for the seat of Manly, Alan Stewart, and was made Minister for Local Government and Minister for Planning shortly after winning his second term in 1988. 1978 New South Wales State Election
A general election was held in the state of New South Wales, Australia, on Saturday 7 October 1978. The result was a landslide victory for the Labor Party under Neville Wran, popularly known as the "Wranslide." It is notable for being so successful for the Labor Party that it tallied 57 percent of the primary vote, the largest primary vote for any party in over a century. Having gone into the election with a razor-thin majority of one seat, Labor scored a 13-seat swing, giving it a strong majority of 63 seats. Labor even managed to defeat the Leader of the Opposition, Peter Coleman, in his own electorate. The seats of many other prominent Shadow Ministers fell to Labor as well. Alan Stewart (Australian Politician)
Alan Gibson Stewart (born 28 March 1938) is a former Australian politician. He was the Labor member for Manly in the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1978 to 1984. Born in Manly, Stewart attended public schools at Harbord and Manly, and then St Aloysius College. He studied at Sydney Technical College, Wagga Agricultural College and Macquarie University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science. At Griffith University he was awarded a PhD in Environmental Science. He served as President of the Harbord branch the Australian Labor Party and a delegate to the Manly State Electoral Council. Stewart is the author of two books: ''Hard Row to Hoe'' and ''Persian Expedition''. In 1978, Stewart won the traditionally Liberal seat of Manly after sitting member Douglas Darby's retirement. The 1968 New South Wales state election was held on 24 February 1968. It was conducted in single member constituencies with compulsory preferential voting and was held on boundaries created at a 1966 redistribution. The election was for all of the 94 seats in the Legislative Assembly.
