Electoral District Of Geraldton
Geraldton is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Western Australia. Geraldton was one of the original 30 seats contested at the 1890 colonial election. The district is based on the eponymous regional city. Labor held throughout most of the twentieth century, Geraldton has since become a seat that has changed hands regularly in the last two decades. Geography The district has always been based on the regional coastal city of Geraldton. Electoral reform ahead of the 2008 state election necessitated an increase in the district's enrolment and thus an expansion of its boundaries, as it did for all non-metropolitan districts. This means the district now includes all outlying suburbs of the city, as well as adjacent rural areas. Lara Dalton
Lara Dalton (born 23 May 1970) is an Australian politician. She is a Labor member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, representing Geraldton since the 2021 state election. Prior to entering politics, Dalton worked at the Geraldton campus of Central Regional TAFE, operated her own cafe, the Salt Dish Cafe, for five years, and then returned to TAFE as a hospitality lecturer. She was the Labor candidate for Geraldton at the 2017 state election. She was defeated by Ian Blayney, but reduced his margin to just 1.3%, recording a swing of 21.5%. She had actually led the field on the first count, but WA National and One Nation preferences proved too much for her to overcome. Dalton was elected to the Legislative Assembly on her second attempt at the 2021 election, receiving 61.71% of the two-party preferred vote and comfortably defeating Blayney amidst a statewide Labor landslide. Shane Hill
Shane Robin Hill (born 2 December 1965 in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia) is an Australian politician. He represented the electorate of Geraldton in the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from the 2001 election for the Labor Party until losing the seat in the 2008 election. Hill defeated the sitting Liberal member, Bob Bloffwitch, in the 2001 state election. In the 2005 state election Hill held the seat by a margin of 2.7%. Hill was a member of the standing committee for Health and Education from 2001 to 2005. Thomas Leishman Brown (5 November 1862 – July 1946) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who served as a Labor Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1906 to 1908, representing the seat of Geraldton. Henry Carson (31 December 1866 – 31 July 1948) was an Australian politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia, as a member of the Legislative Assembly from 1904 to 1906 and from 1908 to 1911, and as a member of the Legislative Council from 1914 to 1920. Robert Hutchinson (Australian Politician)
Robert David Hutchinson (3 March 1857—14 July 1918) was an Australian politician, and a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1900 until 1904 representing the seat of Geraldton. Biography Hutchinson was born in Northampton, a town north of Geraldton, to Robert Hutchinson, the manager of the Waneranooka mine, and Mary Halloran. He worked with his father on the mine until 1878, when he left for Sydney. He worked there with his brother as a builder, stonemason and contractor. On 14 December 1885 at St John's Church in the Sydney suburb of Glebe, he married Mary Ann Gray, with whom he had one son and three daughters. In 1890, he returned to Geraldton with his young family, and was elected to the Geraldton Town Council in 1892. He was made a Justice of the Peace in 1898, and became Mayor of Geraldton from 1898 until 1900. Richard Robson (politician)
Richard Robson (15 March 1867 – 30 November 1928) was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly who resigned in 1900 after making unsubstantiated allegations of corruption against the government of the day. Early life Richard Robson was born at Tynemouth, Northumberland, England on 15 March 1867. He was educated at Mill Hill School in London. In 1887 he emigrated to Western Australia, working as a jackaroo in the Murchison district until after 1890. By 1895 he was in business at Geraldton as a commission and mining agent. That year he married Clara Hosken; they would have five children. In 1898 he was vice-President of the Geraldton Chamber of Commerce. George Thomas Simpson (7 June 1856 – 7 August 1906) was an Australian businessman and politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1891 to 1899, representing the seat of Geraldton. Early life Simpson was born in Sydney to Maria (née Hawthorne) and James Simpson. He initially attended Sydney Grammar School, but his family later moved to Dunedin, New Zealand, where he went to Dunedin High School. Simpson trained as a lawyer but did not complete his training, instead entering commercial life. He moved to Gisborne in 1878, and then returned to Australia in 1883, working as a stockbroker in Broken Hill, New South Wales. Edward Vivian Harvey Keane (8 August 1844 – 9 July 1904) was an Australian engineer, businessman, and politician. Born in Birkenhead, England, he was educated at Christ's Hospital, and emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, in 1876. Keane then moved to South Australia, where he worked as a railway engineer. 2017 Western Australian State Election
The 2017 Western Australian state election was held on Saturday 11 March 2017 to elect members to the Parliament of Western Australia, including all 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly and all 36 seats in the Legislative Council. The eight-and-a-half-year two-term incumbent Liberal– WA National government, led by Premier Colin Barnett, was defeated in a landslide by the Labor opposition, led by Opposition Leader Mark McGowan. Labor won 41 of the 59 seats in the Legislative Assembly—a 12-seat majority.
