Electoral District Of Barcoo
Barcoo was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1885 to 1972. It was created in 1885, by dividing the district of Mitchell, with Barcoo taking up its western area. It was named after the Barcoo River, and covered remote rural areas in Southwest Queensland. Barcoo was mostly a safe seat for the Labor Party The death of Frank Murphy created a by-election on 5 March 1892. A shearer, Tommy Ryan (not to be confused with Premier T. J. Ryan), became the first endorsed Labor candidate in Queensland, and won the seat against opponent William Henry Campbell, the editor and proprietor of the local newspaper, The Western Champion. Barcoo River
The Barcoo River in western Queensland, Australia rises on the northern slopes of the Warrego Range, flows in a south-westerly direction and unites with the Thomson River to form Cooper Creek. The first European to see the river was Thomas Mitchell in 1846, who named it Victoria River, believing it to be the same river as that named Victoria River by J. C. Wickham in 1839. It was renamed by Edmund Kennedy after a name supplied by local Aborigines. The waters of the river flow towards Lake Eyre in central Australia while those of rivers further east join the Murray-Darling basin and reach the sea in South Australia. The river forms a boundary between outback Australia and the "Far Outback"; legend has it that west of the Barcoo there is very little in the way of civilisation. Eugene O'Donnell
Eugene Christopher O'Donnell (28 November 1913 - 16 August 1982) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography O'Donnell was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, the son of Michael Patrick O'Donnell and his wife Mary (née Scanlon). He was educated at St Laurence's College in Brisbane before attending the Brisbane Teachers College. He was then posted to various schools around southern and central Queensland as a teacher and school principal. On The 10th Aug 1936 O'Donnell married Emily Conlon and together had a son and a daughter. Frank William Bulcock (6 June 1892 – 19 January 1973) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Bulcock was born at Mount Arapiles, near Horsham, Victoria in 1892 to Thomas Bulcock and his wife Eliza Mackay (née Grove). After completing his schooling at local schools he studied veterinary science at Sydney Technical College and won a Department of Agriculture bursary to Wagga Wagga Experiment Farm. George Kerr (Australian Politician)
George Kerr (1853–1930) was an Australian politician, grazier, and blacksmith. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Kerr was born on 7 February 1853 at Beadnell, Northumberland, England and after training to become a blacksmith moved to Queensland in 1877. He became a mining speculator on the Croydon goldfields and then set up his own forge in Tambo, Queensland to service mining operations in the local region. Politics Kerr became involved in local politics for the Labor, and in 1893 he was elected to represent the electoral district of Barcoo in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland and served in that post until 1909. He rose to senior positions within the party, culminating in his election as leader of the Queensland Parliamentary Labor Party in 1904 after the death of his predecessor William Browne.
