Evidence-based nursing (EBN) is an approach to making quality decisions and providing nursing care based upon personal clinical expertise in combination with the most current, relevant research available on the topic. This approach is using evidence-based practice (EBP) as a foundation. EBN implements the most up to date methods of providing care, which have been proven through appraisal of high quality studies and statistically significant research findings. The goal of EBN is to improve the health and safety of patients while also providing care in a cost-effective manner to improve the outcomes for both the patient and the healthcare system. EBN is a process founded on the collection, interpretation, appraisal, and integration of valid, clinically significant, and applicable research. In light of studies showing problems in scientific research (such as the replication crisis), there is also a movement to apply evidence-based practices in scientific research itself. Statistically Significant
In statistical hypothesis testing, a result has statistical significance when it is very unlikely to have occurred given the null hypothesis (simply by chance alone). More precisely, a study's defined significance level, denoted by \alpha, is the probability of the study rejecting the null hypothesis, given that the null hypothesis is true; and the p-value, ''p''-value of a result, ''p'', is the probability of obtaining a result at least as extreme, given that the null hypothesis is true. Muriel Skeet
Muriel Skeet FRCN (12 July 1926 – 22 November 2006) was a British nurse, known for her international work and publications. Early life Skeet was born in Suffolk. Following a private education in Colchester she then joined Endsleigh House School. Nursing career Skeet trained as a nurse at London's Middlesex Hospital in March 1945, qualifying as a state-registered nurse in 1949. She worked there as a staff nurse, ward sister and administrative sister until 1960. Skeet then spent a year in the South of France and Rome carrying out private nursing including for the Agnelli family. On her return to England, Skeet became a fieldwork organiser with the Nuffield Provincial Hospitals Trust, now Nuffield Trust. During this time, she undertook a one-year course in medical statistics and epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. PICO Process
The PICO process (or framework) is a mnemonic used in evidence-based practice (and specifically evidence-based medicine) to frame and answer a clinical or health care related question, though it is also argued that PICO "can be used universally for every scientific endeavour in any discipline with all study designs". The PICO framework is also used to develop literature search strategies, for instance in systematic reviews. Informed consent is a principle in medical ethics and medical law, that a patient must have sufficient information and understanding before making decisions about their medical care. Institutional Review Board
An institutional review board (IRB), also known as an independent ethics committee (IEC), ethical review board (ERB), or research ethics board (REB), is a committee that applies research ethics by reviewing the methods proposed for research to ensure that they are ethical. Such boards are formally designated to approve (or reject), monitor, and review biomedical and behavioral research involving humans.
