Elliptic Hypergeometric Series
In mathematics, an elliptic hypergeometric series is a series Σ''c''''n'' such that the ratio ''c''''n''/''c''''n''−1 is an elliptic function of ''n'', analogous to generalized hypergeometric series where the ratio is a rational function of ''n'', and basic hypergeometric series where the ratio is a periodic function of the complex number ''n''. They were introduced by Date-Jimbo-Kuniba-Miwa-Okado (1987) and in their study of elliptic 6-j symbols. For surveys of elliptic hypergeometric series see , or . Definitions The q-Pochhammer symbol is defined by :\displaystyle(a;q)_n = \prod_^ (1-aq^k)=(1-a)(1-aq)(1-aq^2)\cdots(1-aq^). :\displaystyle(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_m;q)_n = (a_1;q)_n (a_2;q)_n \ldots (a_m;q)_n. The modified Jacobi theta function with argument ''x'' and nome ''p'' is defined by :\displaystyle \theta(x;p)=(x,p/x;p)_\infty :\displaystyle \theta(x_1,...,x_m;p)=\theta(x_1;p)...\theta(x_m;p) The elliptic shifted factorial is defined by :\displaystyle(a;q,p)_n = ...

Elliptic Function
In the mathematical field of complex analysis, elliptic functions are a special kind of meromorphic functions, that satisfy two periodicity conditions. They are named elliptic functions because they come from elliptic integrals. Originally those integrals occurred at the calculation of the arc length of an ellipse. Important elliptic functions are Jacobi elliptic functions and the Weierstrass \wp-function. Further development of this theory led to hyperelliptic functions and modular forms. Definition A meromorphic function is called an elliptic function, if there are two \mathbb- linear independent complex numbers \omega_1,\omega_2\in\mathbb such that : f(z + \omega_1) = f(z) and f(z + \omega_2) = f(z), \quad \forall z\in\mathbb. So elliptic functions have two periods and are therefore also called ''doubly periodic''. Period lattice and fundamental domain Iff is an elliptic function with periods \omega_1,\omega_2 it also holds that : f(z+\gamma)=f(z) for every linear ...

Generalized Hypergeometric Series
In mathematics, a generalized hypergeometric series is a power series in which the ratio of successive coefficients indexed by ''n'' is a rational function of ''n''. The series, if convergent, defines a generalized hypergeometric function, which may then be defined over a wider domain of the argument by analytic continuation. The generalized hypergeometric series is sometimes just called the hypergeometric series, though this term also sometimes just refers to the Gaussian hypergeometric series. Generalized hypergeometric functions include the (Gaussian) hypergeometric function and the confluent hypergeometric function as special cases, which in turn have many particular special functions as special cases, such as elementary functions, Bessel functions, and the classical orthogonal polynomials. Notation A hypergeometric series is formally defined as a power series :\beta_0 + \beta_1 z + \beta_2 z^2 + \dots = \sum_ \beta_n z^n in which the ratio of successive coefficients is a ...

Rational Function
In mathematics, a rational function is any function that can be defined by a rational fraction, which is an algebraic fraction such that both the numerator and the denominator are polynomials. The coefficients of the polynomials need not be rational numbers; they may be taken in any field ''K''. In this case, one speaks of a rational function and a rational fraction ''over K''. The values of the variables may be taken in any field ''L'' containing ''K''. Then the domain of the function is the set of the values of the variables for which the denominator is not zero, and the codomain is ''L''. The set of rational functions over a field ''K'' is a field, the field of fractions of the ring of the polynomial functions over ''K''. Definitions A function f(x) is called a rational function if and only if it can be written in the form : f(x) = \frac where P\, and Q\, are polynomial functions of x\, and Q\, is not the zero function. The domain of f\, is the set of all values of x\ ...

Basic Hypergeometric Series
In mathematics, basic hypergeometric series, or ''q''-hypergeometric series, are ''q''-analogue generalizations of generalized hypergeometric series, and are in turn generalized by elliptic hypergeometric series. A series ''x''''n'' is called hypergeometric if the ratio of successive terms ''x''''n''+1/''x''''n'' is a rational function of ''n''. If the ratio of successive terms is a rational function of ''q''''n'', then the series is called a basic hypergeometric series. The number ''q'' is called the base. The basic hypergeometric series _2\phi_1(q^,q^;q^;q,x) was first considered by . It becomes the hypergeometric series F(\alpha,\beta;\gamma;x) in the limit when base q =1. Definition There are two forms of basic hypergeometric series, the unilateral basic hypergeometric series φ, and the more general bilateral basic hypergeometric series ψ. The unilateral basic hypergeometric series is defined as :\;_\phi_k \left begin a_1 & a_2 & \ldots & a_ \\ b_1 & b_2 & \ldots & ...

6-j Symbol
Wigner's 6-''j'' symbols were introduced by Eugene Paul Wigner in 1940 and published in 1965. They are defined as a sum over products of four Wigner 3-j symbols, : \begin j_1 & j_2 & j_3\\ j_4 & j_5 & j_6 \end = \sum_ (-1)^ \begin j_1 & j_2 & j_3\\ -m_1 & -m_2 & -m_3 \end \begin j_1 & j_5 & j_6\\ m_1 & -m_5 & m_6 \end \begin j_4 & j_2 & j_6\\ m_4 & m_2 & -m_6 \end \begin j_4 & j_5 & j_3\\ -m_4 & m_5 & m_3 \end . The summation is over all six allowed by the selection rules of the 3-''j'' symbols. They are closely related to the Racah W-coefficients, which are used for recoupling 3 angular momenta, although Wigner 6-''j'' symbols have higher symmetry and therefore provide a more efficient means of storing the recoupling coefficients. Their relationship is given by: : \begin j_1 & j_2 & j_3\\ j_4 & j_5 & j_6 \end = (-1)^ W(j_1 j_2 j_5 j_4; j_3 j_6). Symmetry relations The 6-''j'' symbol is invariant ...

Q-Pochhammer Symbol
In mathematical area of combinatorics, the ''q''-Pochhammer symbol, also called the ''q''-shifted factorial, is the product (a;q)_n = \prod_^ (1-aq^k)=(1-a)(1-aq)(1-aq^2)\cdots(1-aq^), with (a;q)_0 = 1. It is a ''q''-analog of the Pochhammer symbol (x)_n = x(x+1)\dots(x+n-1), in the sense that \lim_ \frac = (x)_n. The ''q''-Pochhammer symbol is a major building block in the construction of ''q''-analogs; for instance, in the theory of basic hypergeometric series, it plays the role that the ordinary Pochhammer symbol plays in the theory of generalized hypergeometric series. Unlike the ordinary Pochhammer symbol, the ''q''-Pochhammer symbol can be extended to an infinite product: (a;q)_\infty = \prod_^ (1-aq^k). This is an analytic function of ''q'' in the interior of the unit disk, and can also be considered as a formal power series in ''q''. The special case \phi(q) = (q;q)_\infty=\prod_^\infty (1-q^k) is known as Euler's function, and is important in combinatorics, number theory ...

Nome (mathematics)
In mathematics, specifically the theory of elliptic functions, the nome is a special function that belongs to the non-elementary functions. This function is of great importance in the description of the elliptic functions, especially in the description of the modular identity of the Jacobi theta function, the Hermite elliptic transcendents and the Weber modular functions, that are used for solving equations of higher degrees. Definition The nome function is given by :q =\mathrm^ =\mathrm^ =\mathrm^ \, where ''K'' and iK' are the quarter periods, and \omega_1 and \omega_2 are the fundamental pair of periods, and \tau=\frac=\frac is the half-period ratio. The nome can be taken to be a function of any one of these quantities; conversely, any one of these quantities can be taken as functions of the nome. Each of them uniquely determines the others when 0. That is, when 0, the mappings between these various symbols are both 1-to-1 and onto, and so can ...

Jacobi Theta Function
In mathematics, theta functions are special functions of several complex variables. They show up in many topics, including Abelian varieties, moduli spaces, quadratic forms, and solitons. As Grassmann algebras, they appear in quantum field theory. The most common form of theta function is that occurring in the theory of elliptic functions. With respect to one of the complex variables (conventionally called ), a theta function has a property expressing its behavior with respect to the addition of a period of the associated elliptic functions, making it a quasiperiodic function. In the abstract theory this quasiperiodicity comes from the cohomology class of a line bundle on a complex torus, a condition of descent. One interpretation of theta functions when dealing with the heat equation is that "a theta function is a special function that describes the evolution of temperature on a segment domain subject to certain boundary conditions". Throughout this article, (e^)^ should b ...
