Electoral District Of Flinders (Queensland)
The electoral district of Flinders was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. It was first created in 1887, effective 1888, covering the area centred on the central Queensland towns of Cloncurry, Richmond and Hughenden. It replaced the Electoral district of Burke. Flinders, along with parts of Burke, was incorporated into the new seat of Carpentaria in the 1931 redistribution, effective in 1932. It was abolished in a redistribution in 1991, effective 1992. Most of its territory became part of Charters Towers, while the western portion, including Cloncurry, became part of Mount Isa. The last sitting member for Flinders was Bob Katter, who had held it since December 1974. Matthew Flinders
Captain Matthew Flinders (16 March 1774 – 19 July 1814) was a British navigator and cartographer who led the first inshore circumnavigation of mainland Australia, then called New Holland. He is also credited as being the first person to utilise the name ''Australia'' to describe the entirety of that continent including Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania), a title he regarded as being "more agreeable to the ear" than previous names such as ''Terra Australis''. Flinders was involved in several voyages of discovery between 1791 and 1803, the most famous of which are the circumnavigation of Australia and an earlier expedition when he and George Bass confirmed that Van Diemen's Land was an island. While returning to Britain in 1803, Flinders was arrested by the French governor at Isle de France (Mauritius). John Mullan (Australian Politician)
John Mullan (8 September 1871 – 1 October 1941) was an Irish-born Australian politician. Early life Born in Dublin, where he was educated, he migrated to Australia in 1889, becoming a clerk and railway worker. He was an organiser of the Charters Towers Miners' Union and the Australian Workers' Union. Politics In 1908 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Queensland as the Labor member for Charters Towers, where he remained until 1912. In 1913 he was elected to the Australian Senate as a Labor Senator for Queensland. He remained in the Senate until his defeat in 1917, after which he returned to the Queensland Legislative Assembly as the member for Flinders in 1918. He served as Attorney-General from 1920 to 1929. In 1932, he changed seats, moving to Carpentaria, and resumed his position as Attorney-General, which he retained until 1940. The National Party of Australia – Queensland (NPA-Q), commonly known as Queensland Nationals, or the National Party of Queensland, was the Queensland-state branch of the National Party of Australia (NPA) until 2008.
