Ecton, Northamptonshire
Ecton is a village and civil parish in North Northamptonshire, England. The village is just east of Northampton, just off the A4500 road. It was one of the first villages in Northamptonshire to be given conservation status. The toponym is derived from the Old English words ''Ecca'' and ''tun'', meaning "Ecca's farm/settlement." Demographics The 2011 Census recorded 466 people living in the village: 231 male, 235 female, in 211 households. American links Ecton is a place of pilgrimage for many Americans. Benjamin Franklin's ancestors lived here for over 300 years, many generations of them being the village blacksmiths, on a site where now stands the Three Horseshoes Inn. There are still headstones for members of the Franklin family in the village churchyard; inside the church there is a bronze plaque, provided by a group of American visitors in 1910, which has a quotation from one of Benjamin Franklin’s speeches. Ecton Mines, Copper and lead mining at Ecton Hill The village is overlooked by Ecton Hill, which has probably been mined for copper and lead since the sixteenth century. It was leased by the owner the Duke of Devonshire until, in 1760, the fourth duke decided to work it on his own account. Within fifty years, it became the richest individual copper mine in England producing over sixty thousands tons of ore. Until 1769, when the fifth Duke, William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish, opened his own works at nearby Whiston, Staffordshire Moorlands, Whiston in the River Churnet, Churnet Valley, the ore was carried to Denby by packhorse for smelting. John Ecton
John Ecton (died 1730), was an English compiler. Life Ecton, a native of Winchester, was employed in the first-fruits department of the office of Queen Anne's Bounty, where he ultimately became the receiver of the tenths of the clergy. He died at Turnham Green, Middlesex, 20 August 1730. His will, bearing the date 7 July 1730, was proved at London on 8 September 1730 by his widow, Dorothea Ecton. Therein he desired to be buried in Winchester Cathedral. He appears to have left no issue. He devised all his 'manuscript bookes, papers, and collections' to his wife and Dr. Edward Butler, vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford, 'to be jointly att their discretion disposed of in the best manner for the publick service'; but he desired that such as were found completed and likely to prove useful might be published. Zales Nelson Ecton (April 1, 1898March 3, 1961) was an American attorney and politician from Montana who represented the state in the United States Senate, serving from 1947 to 1953. Early life and education Ecton was born in Weldon, Iowa on April 1, 1898.
