The Deputy Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, commonly referred to simply as the Deputy Commissioner, is the second-in-command of London's Metropolitan Police Service. The rank is senior to Assistant Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, Assistant Commissioner, but junior by one rank to Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner's salary from 1 September 2010 is £214,722, making them the second highest paid British police officer. History The rank of Deputy Commissioner was formally established as a separate rank, additional to the assistant commissioners, in 1931. John Smith (police Officer)
Sir John Alfred Smith (born 21 September 1938) is a retired British police officer with the London Metropolitan Police. Smith was educated at St Olave's and St Saviour's Grammar School in Orpington, Kent. He served with the Irish Guards from 1959 to 1962 and then joined the Metropolitan Police as a constable. In 1973 he was in charge of the Obscene Publications Squad and by 1979 he was a Detective Chief Superintendent and head of the Drugs Squad at Scotland Yard. In 1980 he was promoted to Commander and took over "P" District in Bromley and Lewisham. John Dellow
Sir John Albert Dellow (5 June 1931 – 30 December 2022) was a British police officer. Dellow was born in London and educated at William Ellis School, Highgate, and the Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe. After leaving school, he worked for Shell and did his national service in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, working in personnel selection. In 1951, he joined the City of London Police as a Constable. Rising to Chief Inspector and attending Bramshill Police College, he transferred to Kent County Constabulary as a Superintendent in 1966. Peter Michael Imbert, Baron Imbert, (27 April 1933 – 13 November 2017) was Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service from 1987 to 1993, and prior to that appointment Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police from 1979 to 1985. Patrick Kavanagh (police Officer)
Patrick Bernard Kavanagh (18 March 1923 – 11 December 2013) was a senior British police officer. Kavanagh was educated at St. Aloysius' College, Glasgow. He served in the Rifle Brigade from 1941 to 1943 and the Parachute Regiment from 1943 to 1946, ending his service as a Lieutenant. In 1946, he joined the Manchester City Police as a Constable. He rose through the ranks to Superintendent, and in 1964 was appointed Assistant Chief Constable of Cardiff City Police. When it amalgamated to form South Wales Constabulary in 1969 he became ACC of the new force and was promoted Deputy Chief Constable in 1972. On 1 January 1974, he was appointed Assistant Commissioner "B" (Traffic) in the Metropolitan Police and was awarded the Queen's Police Medal (QPM) in the 1974 New Year Honours. Colin Woods
Sir Colin Philip Joseph Woods (20 April 1920 – 27 January 2001) was an English police officer in the London Metropolitan Police who was also the first Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police, from 1979 to 1982. Born in London, Woods was the son of a Metropolitan Police Sub-Divisional Inspector and was educated at Finchley Grammar School. He served in the King's Royal Rifle Corps and the Royal Ulster Rifles (into which he was commissioned in February 1944) throughout the Second World War, from 1939 to 1946, and then joined the Metropolitan Police as a Constable, rising through the ranks to Deputy Commander. Sir John Maxwell Hill (25 March 1914 – 6 May 2004) was a British police officer. Early life Hill was born in Plymouth, the son of a civil servant. He was educated at Plymouth College and joined the Metropolitan Police as a constable in 1933. In 1938 he was selected for Hendon Police College and passed out the following year. War years During the Second World War, Hill served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Enlisting in 1942, he was commissioned (from the rank of leading aircraftman) as a pilot officer in February 1944. In August 1944, he was promoted flying officer. Sir Robert Mark (13 March 1917 – 30 September 2010) was a senior British police officer who served as Chief Constable of Leicester City Police, and later as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police from 1972 to 1977. Sir John Lovegrove Waldron Royal Victorian Order, KCVO (5 November 1909 – 24 August 1975) was a British police officer who served as Chief Constable of Berkshire Constabulary from 1954 to 1958 and Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, Commissioner of the London Metropolitan Police from 1968 to 1972.
