Wing, known in antiquated times as Wyng, is a village and civil parish in east Buckinghamshire, England. The village is on the main A418 road between Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard. It is about north-east of Aylesbury, west of Leighton Buzzard, and south of Milton Keynes. History The Domesday Book of 1086 records the toponym as ''Witehunge''. The name occurs in Old English ''circa'' 966–975 as ''Weowungum'' (dative plural case). It could mean: *"Wiwa's sons or people". *"The dwellers at, or devotees of, a heathen temple." The first syllables of the names of the nearby village of Wingrave and the nearby hamlet of Wingbury have the same etymology. Peter de Salis, 3rd Count de Salis (28 June 1738 - 19 November 1807) was a soldier and official. Early life and education He was the second son of Jerome De Salis by his wife Mary, daughter of the first Viscount Fane. He was educated with his brothers, Charles and Henry, in the Grisons, in Chur where his tutor was Johann Heinrich Lambert, and then at Eton. Career He left Eton early in 1754 and was commissioned as an ensign in the 1st Regiment of Foot on 17 October 1754, which cost £900, subsequently he fought in the Seven Years' War, becoming a lieutenant on 27 October 1760. He left the army a captain. Salis was Governor and Capitaine General of the Valtelline 1771–1773, and 1781–1783, where, it was said at the time, "with great munificence, insight and skill he hastened to relieve the poverty of the population of Chiavenna". Cuppacumbalong is an historic homestead located near the southern outskirts of Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory. It is also the name of a former sheep and cattle grazing property that surrounded the homestead near the junction of the Murrumbidgee and Gudgenby Rivers. The word ''Cuppacumbalong'' is Aboriginal in origin and means 'meeting of the waters'. John Francis William de Salis, 6th Count de Salis (*Neuchatel 25 August 1825 – †Hillingdon 7 August 1871) was a Count de Salis-Soglio, a British diplomat, and coin connoisseur. Life He was the eldest son of Count Peter John de Salis by his second wife Cecile Henrietta Marguerite, daughter of David Bourgeoise of Neuchâtel. After some education in London (Harrow) he was an Attaché in Turin (October 1845-December 1849). Lived at Hillingdon. He was a JP for Middlesex. ''Bradshaw's'' was a series of railway Public transport timetable, timetables and travel guide books published by W.J. Adams and later Henry Blacklock, both of London. They are named after founder George Bradshaw, who produced his first timetable in October 1839. Although Bradshaw died in 1853, the range of titles bearing his name (and commonly referred to by that alone) continued to expand for the remainder of the 19th and early part of the 20th century, covering at various times Continental Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand, as well as parts of the Middle-East. They survived until May 1961, when the final monthly edition of the British guide was produced.
