Cultural Technology
Cultural technology () is a system used by South Korean talent agencies to promote K-pop culture throughout the world as part of the Korean Wave. The system was developed by Lee Soo-man, founder of talent agency and record company SM Entertainment. History Coinage During a speech at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2011, Lee said he coined the term "cultural technology" about fourteen years prior, when S.M. Entertainment decided to promote its K-pop artists to all of Asia. In the late 1990s, Lee and his colleagues created a manual on cultural technology, which specified the steps needed to popularize K-pop artists outside South Korea. 4Minute (, often stylized as 4MINUTE) was a South Korean girl group formed in 2009 by Cube Entertainment. The members of the group were Son Ji-hyun, Nam Ji-hyun, Heo Ga-yoon, Jeon Ji-yoon, Hyuna, Kim Hyuna and Kwon So-hyun. The group was known for its edgy dance-pop style and "girl crush" image that attracted a large female fan base. The group debuted in June 2009 with the single, "Hot Issue." They ultimately released one full-length Japanese album, ''Diamond (4Minute album), Diamond'' (2010), one full-length Korean album, ''4Minutes Left'' (2011), seven Korean extended plays, and multiple singles. Wong Yuk-hei ( zh, t=黃旭熙; born 25 January 1999), better known mononymously as Lucas (), is a Hong Kong rapper, singer, and model based in South Korea. He is a member of the South Korean boy group NCT, its Chinese sub-unit WayV and rotational sub-unit NCT U, as well as the supergroup SuperM. In China, he has appeared as a regular cast member of the seventh and ninth season of the popular variety show ''Keep Running''. Chittaphon Leechaiyapornkul ( th, ชิตพล ลี้ชัยพรกุล; ; ; born February 27, 1996), known professionally as Ten ( th, เตนล์, ko, 텐), is a Thai singer and dancer based in South Korea and China. SM Rookies (, stylized as SMROOKIES) is a pre-debut training team created by South Korean entertainment agency SM Entertainment in 2013, composed of trainees who have yet to join an idol group. ''Weekly Idol'' is a South Korean variety show that began in 2011 and currently airs Wednesdays at 7:30 PM KST on MBC M, and 12:00 AM KST on MBC Every1. It is one of the longest-running variety shows to air on satellite TV in Japan. The show was hosted during its first season by comedian Jeong Hyeong-don and rapper Defconn. The production company behind the show, Genie Pictures was acquired by FNC Add Culture on January 15, 2018, while FNC Add Culture was acquired by SM Entertainment on May 18, 2018 and renamed SM Life Design Group. On February 22, 2018, MBC Every1 announced that both hosts would be stepping down from the show.
