Physician
A physician (American English), medical practitioner (Commonwealth English), medical doctor, or simply doctor, is a health professional who practices medicine, which is concerned with promoting, maintaining or restoring health through the study, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of disease, injury, and other physical and mental impairments. Physicians may focus their practice on certain disease categories, types of patients, and methods of treatment—known as specialities—or they may assume responsibility for the provision of continuing and comprehensive medical care to individuals, families, and communities—known as general practice. Medical practice properly requires both a detailed knowledge of the academic disciplines, such as anatomy and physiology, underlying diseases and their treatment—the ''science'' of medicine—and also a decent competence in its applied practice—the art or ''craft'' of medicine. Both the role of the physician and the meaning ...

A Country Doctor (novel)
''A Country Doctor'' is a novel by American author Sarah Orne Jewett. The book, which was first published in 1884, was based on the relationship between Jewett and her physician father. Plot summary The main character of ''A Country Doctor'', Nan, is a young woman that encounters much strife when she decides to go against the traditional values of the day and become a doctor. Analysis The work has been compared to Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward's ''Doctor Zay'', which also depicted a woman seeking a medical career in the late 1800s. The book has been listed as an example of the shift in the perception of the role of women in society, with the main character of Nan choosing to pursue her career in medicine rather than a marriage and family. Themes addressed in ''A Country Doctor'' include the difficulty of meshing together the past and the future. The role of women in society, the eschewing of traditional roles and gender conventions, and whether or not it is possible for a woma ...

A Country Doctor (short Story)
“A Country Doctor” (German: “Ein Landarzt”) is a short story written in 1917 by Franz Kafka. It was first published in the collection of short stories of the same title. In the story, a country doctor makes an emergency visit to a sick patient on a winter night. The doctor faces absurd, surreal predicaments that pull him along and finally doom him. Plot The plot follows a country doctor's hapless struggle to attend a sick young boy on a snowy winter's night. A series of surreal events occurs in the process, including the appearance of a mysterious groom (stablehand) in a pig shed. It begins with the doctor having to urgently attend a sick patient in a village ten miles away, but his only horse died the night before, so his maid Rosa goes off to find another. She returns empty-handed — "Of course, who is now going to lend her his horse for such a journey?" — and the doctor expresses his frustration by kicking the door of what he thinks is his empty pig shed. A my ...

A Country Doctor (short Story Collection)
''A Country Doctor'' (German: ''Ein Landarzt'') is a collection of short stories written mostly in 1917 by Franz Kafka, containing the story of the same name. Kurt Wolff published it in 1919 as the second collection of stories by Kafka, after '' Betrachtung'' (''Contemplation'', 1912). Kafka dedicated the collection to his father. He often recounted to Max Brod the reaction of his father when he presented it to him: "Lay it on my nightstand." The stories themselves have one thing in particular in common: somewhere, whether at the beginning or later in the course of the text, an unsettling moment, which is sometimes termed the "Kafka Paradox", occurs. * Der neue Advokat (The New Advocate) * Ein Landarzt ( A Country Doctor) * Auf der Galerie ( Up in the Gallery) * Ein altes Blatt (An Old Manuscript) * Vor dem Gesetz (Before the Law) * Schakale und Araber (Jackals and Arabs) * Ein Besuch im Bergwerk ( A Visit to the Mine) * Das nächste Dorf (The Next Village) * Eine kaiserliche Bo ...

Le Médecin De Campagne
''Le Médecin de campagne'' (''The Country Doctor'') is an 1833 novel by Honoré de Balzac. The second in his ''Scène de la vie de campagne'' series, it addresses the author's preoccupations with social organisation, political power and religion, though Balzac's own political principles were not those of the character Dr Benassis. None of the characters appear elsewhere in ''La Comédie humaine''. The heart of the third part of the book is made up of tales told during a vigil in a barn by Goguelat, a former soldier in the armies of Napoleon. This section uses material that Balzac had gathered for a planned work, ''Les Batailles napoléoniennes'', which he began but never finished. Synopsis In 1829 Commander Genestas arrives in a village in the Dauphiné The Dauphiné (, ) is a former province in Southeastern France, whose area roughly corresponded to that of the present departments of Isère, Drôme and Hautes-Alpes.
