2022 Australian Federal Election
The 2022 Australian federal election was held on Saturday 21 May 2022 to elect members of the 47th Parliament of Australia. The incumbent Liberal/National Coalition government, led by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, sought to win a fourth consecutive term in office but was defeated by the opposition, the Labor Party, led by Anthony Albanese. Up for election were all 151 seats in the lower house, the House of Representatives, and 40 of the 76 seats in the upper house, the Senate. The Australian Labor Party achieved a majority government for the first time since 2007, winning 77 seats in the House of Representatives. Albanese was sworn in as Prime Minister on 23 May 2022, becoming the fourth Labor leader to win government from opposition since World War II, after Gough Whitlam in 1972, Bob Hawke in 1983, and Kevin Rudd in 2007. Division Of Barton
The Division of Barton is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History The division was created in 1922 and is named for Sir Edmund Barton, the first Prime Minister of Australia. For most of its history, Barton has been a marginal seat. Although it was held by the Australian Labor Party for most of the time after 1940, it has been won by the Liberals (or their predecessors) at "high-tide" elections. Barton's most prominent member has been Dr H. V. Evatt, who was Leader of the Labor Party between 1951 and 1960. After seeing his majority more than halved in 1949, and nearly being defeated in 1951 and 1955, he transferred to the safe seat of Hunter in 1958. Paul William Fletcher (born 16 January 1965) is an Australian politician who served as Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts from 2020 to 2022. Fletcher is a member of the Liberal Party of Australia, and has served as member of parliament (MP) for the division of Bradfield since 2009. Fletcher entered politics after winning the 2009 Bradfield by-election. The Division of Bradfield is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. History Bradfield was created in the 1949 expansion of Parliament, and was named in honour of Dr John Bradfield, the designer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Its first member was Billy Hughes, a former Prime Minister of Australia and the last serving member of the first federal Parliament. The bulk of the seat was carved out of North Sydney, which Hughes represented from 1923 to 1949. Elvis Sinosic (born 13 February 1971) is a retired Australian professional mixed martial artist and unsuccessful Political Candidate for United Australia in Blaxland. Sinosic is perhaps best known for his seven-fight stint in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he ultimately accumulated a 1-6 record, and fought for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship. Julian Martin Leeser (born 25 May 1976) is an Australian politician who served as Shadow Attorney-General and Shadow Minister for Indigenous Australians. He is a member of the Liberal Party and has represented the Division of Berowra since the 2016 federal election. Early life Leeser was born in Sydney. His father John, an accountant, was the son of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany, while his mother Sylvia is a fifth-generation Australian whose father was a survivor of the Burma Railway.
