Camel Spin
The camel spin (also called the parallel spin) is one of the three basic figure skating spin positions. British figure skater Cecilia Colledge was the first to perform it. The camel spin, for the first ten years after it was created, was performed mostly by women, although American skater Dick Button performed the first forward camel spin, a variation of the camel spin, and made it a regular part of the repertoire performed by male skaters. The camel spin is executed on one foot, and is an adaptation of the ballet pose the arabesque to the ice. When the camel spin is executed well, the stretch of the skater's body creates a slight arch or straight line. Skaters increase the difficulty of camel spins in a variety of ways. Figure Skating Spins
Spins are an element in figure skating in which the skater rotates, centered on a single point on the ice, while holding one or more body positions. They are performed by all disciplines of the sport, single skating, pair skating, and ice dance, and are a required element in most figure skating competitions. Cecilia Colledge
Magdalena Cecilia Colledge (28 November 1920 – 12 April 2008) was a British figure skater. She was the 1936 Olympic silver medalist, the 1937 World Champion, the 1937–1939 European Champion, and a six-time (1935–1939, 1946) British national champion. Colledge is credited as being the first female skater to perform a double jump, as well as being the inventor of both the camel spin and the layback spin. Personal life Cecilia Colledge grew up in London. Her father, Lionel, was a surgeon researching the treatment of throat cancer, and her mother, Margaret, the daughter of Admiral John Brackenbury. She had one sibling, a brother named Maule who served in the Royal Air Force and died during World War II. Colledge never married and had no children. Dick Button
Richard Totten Button (born July 18, 1929) is an American former figure skater and skating analyst. He is a two-time Olympic champion (1948, 1952) and five-time consecutive World champion (1948–1952). He is also the only non-European man to have become European champion. Button is credited as having been the first skater to successfully land the double Axel jump in competition in 1948, as well as the first triple jump of any kind – a triple loop – in 1952. He also invented the flying camel spin, which was originally known as the "Button camel". Early life Button was born and raised in Englewood, New Jersey. Arabesque (ballet Position)
Arabesque (; literally, "in Arabic fashion") in dance, particularly ballet, is a body position in which a dancer stands on one leg–the ''supporting'' leg–with the other leg–the ''working'' leg– turned out and extended behind the body, with both legs held straight. In classical ballet, an arabesque can be executed with the supporting leg ''en pointe'' or ''demi pointe'' or with foot flat on the floor. The working leg may touch the floor in ''tendu'' back – an ''arabesque par terre'' – or be elevated. Common elevation angles of the raised leg are 45° – ''à demi hauteur'' – and 90° – ''à la hauteur''. A layback spin is a variation of the upright spin, a spin in figure skating. The sit spin (also known as the Jackson Haines spin) is one of the oldest elements in figure skating. The upright spin is one of the three basic figure skating spin positions. International Skating Union
The International Skating Union (ISU) is the international governing body for competitive ice skating disciplines, including figure skating, synchronized skating, speed skating, and short track speed skating. Emily Hughes
Emily Anne Hughes (born January 26, 1989) is an American former figure skater. She is the 2007 Four Continents silver medalist and 2007 U.S. national silver medalist. She competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics, finishing 7th. Personal life Hughes was born in Great Neck, New York. Her father, John Hughes, was a Canadian of Irish descent, and was the captain of the NCAA champion 1969–70 Cornell University ice hockey team. Her mother, Amy Pastarnack, is Jewish and is a breast cancer survivor. Hughes has supported a variety of causes for breast cancer research and awareness, including Skating for Life, a television special that she promoted on NBC's Today show. She has five siblings. Yukari Nakano
is a Japanese former competitive figure skater. She is the 2006 Four Continents silver medalist, the 2003 Four Continents bronze medalist, the 2005–06 Grand Prix Final bronze medalist, the 2007 Asian Winter Games champion, and a three-time (2006, 2007, 2009) Japanese national bronze medalist.
