Curio, Switzerland
Curio is a municipality in the district of Lugano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. History Curio is first mentioned in 1196 as ''Coira''. In 1298 it was mentioned as ''Cuyri''. During the Middle Ages Curio, Novaggio, Banco and Bedigliora formed a '' Kastlanei''. The first village church, consecrated to St. Peter, was mentioned in 1352. The present church was built in 1609. Historically, many residents emigrated to foreign countries for work. Some of these emigrant families became quite famous. They include the family Avanzini (notaries, doctors, construction workers) and Visconti (architects and engineers), who worked, from the end of the 18th and over the entire 19th centuries, in Piedmont and Russia. Their success led them to perform a number of philanthropic works in Curio. In the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century, this resulted in a number of charitable foundations. The most significant was the art school, which was founded in 1850. In 1985, the Mu ...

Curio Bay
Curio Bay is a coastal embayment in the Southland District of New Zealand, best known as the site of a petrified forest some 180 million years old. It also hosts a yellow-eyed penguin colony, arguably the rarest of penguin species, with approximately 1600 breeding pairs in the extant population. The bay, along with neighbouring Porpoise Bay, is home to the endemic Hector's dolphin. Southern right whales are occasionally observed offshore, as on numerous parts of the country's coast. Located near the southernmost point of the South Island, Curio Bay is one of the major attractions in the Catlins, attracting around 100,000 visitors per year. The town of Waikawa has an information center for tourists. The now petrified logs, from ancient conifers closely related to modern kauri and Norfolk pine, were buried by ancient volcanic mud flows and gradually replaced by silica to produce the fossils now exposed by the sea. The fossilised forest grew at a time of semi-tropical clima ...

Curio Maximus
The ''curio maximus'' was an obscure priesthood in ancient Rome that had oversight of the ''curiae'', groups of citizens loosely affiliated within what was originally a tribe. Each curia was led by a ''curio'', who was admitted only after the age of 50 and held his office for life. The ''curiones'' were required to be in good health and without physical defect, and could not hold any other civil or military office; the pool of willing candidates was thus neither large nor eager. In the early Republic, the ''curio maximus'' was always a patrician, and officiated as the senior ''interrex''. The earliest ''curio maximus'' identified as such is Servius Sulpicius (consul 500 BC), who held the office in 463. The first plebeian to hold the office was elected in 209 BC. The election of a plebeian to succeed an impeccably pedigreed Aemilius Papus was predictably controversial, even though the office of ''curio maximus'' had become "anachronistic and somewhat bizarre", and the election o ...
