{{Expand Italian, Conti di Montone, date=March 2018 The County of Montone was a noble fiefdom in Italy, formed of the town of Montone and its territory. That territory was turned into a county by Antipope John XXIII on 28 August 1414 and granted by him to Braccio da Montone, a condottiero. Pope Martin V refounded it and on Braccio's death in 1424 confirmed it to Braccio's son Carlo. It was under the jurisdiction of the Papal States until 1519, when pope Leo X granted it to Vitello Vitelli, a member of the Vitelli family of Città di Castello. That family held it until 1573 and then from 1598 to 1646, when their line went extinct. The House of Vitelli, among other families so named, were a prominent noble family of Umbria, rulers of Città di Castello and lesser '' rocche''. Vitellozzo Vitelli (cardinal)
Vitellozzo Vitelli (1531 – 19 November 1568) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church. Life Vitelli was born in 1531 in Città di Castello of Captain Alessandro Vitellozzi, signore of Amatrice, and Angela di Troilo Rossi, and educated at the University of Padua. He was ordained a cleric of Città di Castello and appointed bishop there on 20 March 1554, an office he would resign in 1560. He went to Rome in February 1556 and was created cardinal deacon 15 March 1557, receiving the deaconry of Ss. Sergio e Bacco on 24 March. He opted for the deaconry of S. Maria in Portico Octaviae in March 1559 and that of Santa Maria in Via Lata in November 1564. Vitellozzo Vitelli
Vitellozzo Vitelli (c. 1458December 31, 1502) was an Italian condottiero. He was lord of Montone, Città di Castello, Monterchi and Anghiari. Biography Together with his father, Niccolò, who became lord of Città di Castello, and his brothers, who all at one time or other were condottieri (mercenary captains), this family instituted a new type of infantry armed with sword and pike to resist the German men-at-arms, and also a corps of mounted infantry armed with arquebuses. Vitellozzo served the Medici of Florence in their war against Pisa, and later with the French in Apulia in 1496 and with the Orsini faction against Pope Alexander VI. In 1500 Vitellozzo and the Orsini made peace with the pope, and the latter's son Cesare Borgia, being determined to crush the petty tyrants of Romagna and consolidate papal power in that province, took the condottieri into his service.
