Comarques
This is a list of the 42 ''comarques'' (singular ''comarca'', , ) into which Catalonia is divided. A ''Comarcas of Spain, comarca'' is a group of municipalities of Catalonia, municipalities, roughly equivalent to a county in the US or a district or council in the Local government in the UK, UK. However, in the context of Catalonia, the term "county" can be a bit misleading, because in Middle Ages, medieval Catalonia, aside from the kings of Aragon, the most important rulers were counts, notably the List of Counts of Barcelona, Counts of Barcelona and Counts of Urgell, of Urgell. Comarques have no particular relation to the "Catalan counties, counties" that were ruled by counts. Comarcas Of Spain
In Spain, a ''comarca'' (, sing. ''comarca'') is either a traditional territorial division without any formal basis, or a group of municipalities, legally defined by an autonomous community for the purpose of providing common local government services. In English, a comarca is equivalent to a district, county, area or zone. Legally defined comarcas The large majority of legally defined comarcas are in Catalonia (42) and Aragon (33)), and are regulated by law and are governed by a comarcal council with specified powers. There are seven comarcas formally registered in Basque Country and one in Castile and León. In Andalusia and Asturias, comarcas are defined by law but lack any defined function. Val D'Aran
Aran (; ; ) (previously officially called in Occitan Val d'Aran, Catalan: ''Vall d'Aran'', Spanish: ''Valle de Arán'') is an administrative entity (formerly considered a comarca) in Lleida, Catalonia, Spain, consisting of the Aran Valley, in area, in the Pyrenees mountains, in the northwestern part of the province of Lleida. This valley constitutes the only contiguous part of Catalonia located on the northern side of the Pyrenees. Hence, this valley holds the only Catalan rivers to flow into the Atlantic Ocean (for the same reason, the region is characterized by an Atlantic climate, instead of a Mediterranean one). The Garonne river flows through Aran from its source on the Pla de Beret (Beret Flat) near the Port de la Bonaigua. Alta Ribagorça
Alta Ribagorça () is one of the comarques of Catalonia, Spain. Its capital is Pont de Suert. The highest peak is the Comaloformo (3030 metres above sea level) in the massif of Bessiberri. Northeast of the region is the western part of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. It is connected with the Aran valley thorough the Vielha tunnel. Alt Camp () is a comarca (county) in Catalonia, Spain. It is one of the three comarques into which Camp de Tarragona was divided in the comarcal division of 1936. Geography Alt Camp is a county in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia, Spain. To the north of the county lies Conca de Barberà, to the northeast lies Anoia, to the east and southeast lie Alt Penedès and Baix Penedès, to the south lies Tarragonès and to the southwest and west lies Baix Camp. Alt Camp has an area of and the capital of the county is Valls. The county is divided into two main topographical areas. Municipalities Of Catalonia
Catalonia is (as of 2018) divided into 947 Municipalities of Spain, municipalities. Each municipality typically represents one significant urban settlement, of any size from village to city, with its surrounding land. This is not always the case, though. Many municipalities have merged as a result of rural depopulation or simply for greater efficiency. Some large urban areas, for example Barcelona, consist of more than one municipality, each of which previously held a separate settlement.
