A cabin motorcycle is a fully or semi-enclosed motorcycle. They first appeared in the 1920s In parts of Eastern Europe, they are known as dalniks. Zerotracer
The Zerotracer is a purpose built Electric vehicle for the Zero Emissions Race which went around the world in 2010/11. The vehicle seats two in a closed cabin, while its driving characteristics are more similar to a motorbike. Quasar (motorcycle)
The Quasar is a semi-enclosed feet forward motorcycle, created by Malcolm Newell and Ken Leaman, who made a number of similar vehicles. It repurposed an 850 cc four-cylinder inline engine used in the Reliant Robin three-wheeled light car and is capable of cruising at 90–100 mph (145–160 km/h) and exceeding 100 mph in favourable conditions. Design In the Quasar, the rider sits feet forward or feet first, changing the usual position of the rider from on top and straddling the vehicle, to inside and sitting down. Unlike most motorcycles, the Quasar is a cabin motorcycle with a roof which goes over the rider. While normally not a problem, tall riders with larger, more modern helmets may have trouble fitting inside although it is also possible to carry a passenger with an intimate squeeze. Gyro Canopy
The Honda Gyro is a family of small, three-wheeled motorcycles sold primarily in Japan, and often used for delivery or express service. These vehicles are tilting three-wheelers. They combine a tricycle's stopped & low-speed stability with a leaning main-body for stability while turning at speed. They resemble a scooter with a small hinged rear pod containing the engine and two drive wheels. This particular variation was developed and patented by George Wallis of G. L. Wallis & Son in Surbiton, Surrey in 1966. It was first marketed in the failed BSA Ariel 3 of 1970, then licensed to Honda. Honda has built seven models with this configuration. Benelli Adiva
The Benelli Adiva is the first scooter manufactured as a joint venture between Benelli and Adiva SRL. History The Adiva has an innovative folding metal roof, which together with the windscreen and side wind deflectors, offers excellent weather protection for rider and pillion passenger. First displayed in 1999 it was sold to the public between 2001 and 2006. Although similar in looks to the BMW C1, the Adiva's roof is only for weather protection. When not required, the roof can be folded up and stored in rear storage box (80 liters). The Adiva is regarded as having better handling than the C1. The Adiva was offered in 125 and 150 cc versions, which share identical bodywork. The Adiva uses a Piaggio Leader ET4 engine which is also used in the Piaggio Vespa. BMW C1
The BMW C1 is an enclosed scooter made by Bertone for BMW. Compared to a conventional scooter, the C1 offered extra safety features and protection from the elements. The rider would sit in a car-type seat (with a four-point seat-belt) and adopt a feet-forward posture. Introduced in 2000, it was available throughout Europe, but sales were disappointing and the C1 was discontinued in 2002. In 2009 the C1-E electric version was presented as a concept. Models The C1 was originally available from May 2000 with a 125 model designation; in 2001, a 200 model was added. The "125" has a 125 cc capacity four valve, four-stroke, water-cooled, fuel injected engine producing at 9250 RPM; the "200" has a larger engine producing at 9000 RPM. The Ecomobile is a cabin motorcycle produced by Peraves AG, manufactured in Winterthur, Switzerland since 1984. History Arnold Wagner of Switzerland received a patent in 1983 for a support device for a single-track vehicle, a requirement for cabin motorcycles, for which he also received a patent in 1984. Peraves
Peraves AG was a Swiss manufacturer of high-end aerodynamically-enhanced cabin motorcycles. It won the Automotive X Prize for its entirely electric X-Tracer in 2010. By 2019 it had declared bankruptcy. History Peraves AG was founded in 1972 by Swissair Pilot Arnold Wagner. Wagner finished a prototype of an enclosed motorcycle in 1982, and was able to convince the Swiss government to make it street legal in 1985. The vehicle, christened the Ecomobile, was approved by the TÃœV, which allowed it to be sold in the EU in 1991.
