Boroughs And Quarters Of Hamburg
The city of Hamburg in Germany is made up of seven boroughs (German: ''Bezirke'', also known as ''districts'' or ''administrative districts'') and subdivided into 104 quarters (German: ''Stadtteile''). Most of the quarters were former independent settlements. The areal organisation is regulated by the constitution of Hamburg and several laws. The subdivision into boroughs and quarters was last modified in March 2008. Borough overview History The first official administrative divisions of Hamburg were the parishes of four churches, the St. Peter's, St. Catherine's, St. James's and St. Nicholas's Churches (or their preceding buildings). On 24 February, 1529 a compromise of 132 articles between the senate of Hamburg and the citizens (German: ''Langer Rezeß'') established a council of citizens. Neuwerk
Neuwerk (; (''Archaic English'': New Werk or Newark) is a tidal island in the Wadden Sea on the German North Sea coast, with a population of 32. Neuwerk is located northwest of Cuxhaven, between the Weser and Elbe estuaries. The distance to the centre of Hamburg is about . Administratively, Neuwerk forms a homonymous quarter of the city and state of Hamburg, Germany, and is part of the borough Hamburg-Mitte. This quarter includes the islands of Scharhörn and Nigehörn, which are bird sanctuaries and closed to the public. All three islands and the Wadden Sea around them form the Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park. Dikes encircle the island, which is about , and one can walk around it in an hour. Allermöhe
Allermöhe () is a quarter in the borough Bergedorf of the Free and Hanseatic city of Hamburg in northern Germany. The quarter consists of a rural area and the old settlement Allermöhe. In 2020 the population was 1,392 (without the new neighbourhood Neuallermöhe, which is a separate quarter). History In 1410 the State of Hamburg settled the ''Landherrenschaft Bill- und Ochsenwerder''. The settlement Allermöhe belonged to this rural village. In 1997 the planning for a completely new neighbourhood began. From 1982 to 1994 more than 3,800 flats were constructed, creating the neighbourhood Neuallermöhe (New Allermöhe). Reeperbahn
The Reeperbahn () is a street and entertainment district in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, one of the two centres of Hamburg's nightlife (the other being Sternschanze) and also the city's major red-light district. In German, it is also nicknamed ''die sündigste Meile'' (the most sinful mile) and ''Kiez''. The Reeperbahn Festival is among the largest club festivals. Name and history The name ''Reeperbahn'' means ropewalk, which is a place where ropes are made ( nds, Reep = rope, the standard German word is ; = track). Kiez
''Kiez'' () (also: ''Kietz'') is a German word that refers to a city neighbourhood, a relatively small community within a larger town. The word is mainly used in Berlin and northern Germany. Similar quarters are called ''Veedel'' in Cologne and ''Grätzl'' in Vienna. Original meaning and etymology The word ''Kietz'' originated in the time of the eastward expansion of German settlers in the Middle Ages into West Slavic territories (''Germania Slavica''), when in many places both communities existed side by side. The word is possibly of Slavic origin (compare Slovak ''chyža'' 'hut, cottage', cf. Kessinians) and referred to a Slavic settlement (typically of fishermen) near a German town.
