Blackfin Cisco
The blackfin cisco (''Coregonus nigripinnis'') was a North American salmonid fish in the freshwater whitefish sub-family Coregoninae. This silvery, deep-bodied fish with black fins, large eyes, a blunt snout and a terminal mouth, was one of the largest forms of ciscoes. The blackfin cisco used to inhabit the Great Lakes of North America until recently, but has been reported to have gone extinct. The blackfin cisco is a member of the '' C. artedi'' complex, whose taxonomy has not yet been resolved, and it may not represent a valid species. Taxonomy The species was first mentioned by P.R. Hoy 1872, attributing Gill as the species authority, but Gill's manuscript was never published. The first valid description of this species is attributed to James Wood Milner in 1874. A data deficient (DD) species is one which has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as offering insufficient information for a proper assessment of conservation status to be made. This does not necessarily indicate that the species has not been extensively studied; but it does indicate that little or no information is available on the abundance and distribution of the species. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC, French: Comité sur la situation des espèces en péril au Canada, COSEPAC) is an independent committee of wildlife experts and scientists whose "raison d'être is to identify species at risk" in Canada. It designates the conservation status of wild species. It was established in 1977 to provide a single, scientifically sound classification of wildlife species at risk of extinction. Rainbow Smelt
The rainbow smelt (''Osmerus mordax'') is a North American species of fish of the family Osmeridae. Walleye, trout, and other larger fish prey on these smelt. The rainbow smelt prefer juvenile ciscoes, zooplankton such as calanoid copepods ('' Leptodiaptomus ashlandi'', '' L. minutus'', '' L. sicilis''), and other small organisms, but are aggressive and will eat almost any fish they find. They are anadromous spring spawners and prefer clean streams with light flow and light siltation. The rainbow smelt face several barriers.
