The Battle of San Fermo, which took place the 27 May 1859 at a pass near Como in the northern part of Lombardy, was an engagement of the Second Italian War of Independence in which the Italian volunteers of Giuseppe Garibaldi's Hunters of the Alps defeated an Austrian force, forcing the Austrians to abandon Como. Second Italian War Of Independence
The Second Italian War of Independence, also called the Franco-Austrian War, the Austro-Sardinian War or Italian War of 1859 ( it, Seconda guerra d'indipendenza italiana; french: Campagne d'Italie), was fought by the Second French Empire and the Savoyard Kingdom of Sardinia against the Austrian Empire in 1859 and played a crucial part in the process of Italian Unification. A year prior to the war, in the Plombières Agreement, France agreed to support Sardinia's efforts to expel Austria from Italy in return for territorial compensation in the form of the Duchy of Savoy and the County of Nice. The two states signed a military alliance in January 1859. Sardinia mobilised its army on 9 March 1859, and Austria mobilized on 9 April. Karl Von Urban
Karl (Carl) Freiherr von Urban (born 31 August 1802 in Cracovia; died 1 January 1877 in Brno) was an Austrian ''feldmarschall-leutnant''. In command of a 1,500-strong force of Grenz infantry he suppressed the 10,000-strong revolt of the Székelys, and on 18 November 1848 he defeated the insurgents at Klausenburg. During the Italian Campaign of 1859, von Urban was ordered to check Garibaldis Alpine Hunters on the Austrian right flank. Hunters Of The Alps
The Hunters of the Alps ( it, Cacciatori delle Alpi) were a military corps created by Giuseppe Garibaldi in Cuneo on 20 February 1859 to help the regular Sardinian army to free the northern part of Italy in the Second Italian War of Independence. As their name suggests, the corps' five regiments of volunteers operated in the Alps. Among their victories in the Second Italian War of Independence in 1859, were those over the Austrians at Varese and Como. They also saw action during the Third Italian War of Independence in 1866, fighting on the Prussian side against the Austrians. On this occasion, the 40,000 volunteers showed their value by achieving a decisive victory at the Battle of Bezzecca (21 July 1866), and thus nearly reaching the town of Trento. Angelo Trezzini (28 April 1827, Milan - 27 May 1904, Milan) was an Italian painter. Biography Enrolled at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts from 1844 to 1846, Trezzini served his pictorial apprenticeship in the studio of the Induno brothers, under the guidance of Domenico, his brother-in-law, and in close contact with Gerolamo, his comrade in arms in the First Italian War of Independence. In order to escape the Austrian army during the riots in Milan (1848), he took refuge with his grandparents in Astano, Switzerland, where he welcomed the Indunos, who had also fled. In 1859, he fought with the Hunters of the Alps, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi. In 1861, he won the Mylius Prize for genre painting.
