Ge Fei (badminton)
Ge Fei (; born 9 October 1975) is a Chinese former badminton player who is one of the most successful doubles specialists in the sport's history. Among many international titles, Ge won two Olympic gold medals and two IBF World Championship gold medals in the women's doubles with her regular partner Gu Jun and a World Championship gold medal in the mixed doubles with Liu Yong. Ge was also a member of Chinese teams that captured the Uber Cup (women's world team trophy) in 1998 and 2000. Ge and Gu Jun were the world's dominant women's doubles team from the mid-1990s to their retirement after the 2000 Olympics, winning over thirty top tier international titles together. Ge Fei was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2008. She is married to the former World Champion singles badminton player Sun Jun. Badminton had its debut as an official event on the 1992 Summer Olympics and has been contested in eight Olympiads. 74 different nations have appeared in the Olympic badminton competitions, with 18 appearing all eight times. It is governed by the Badminton World Federation. Summary History The 1972 Summer Olympics saw the inaugural staging of badminton, as a demonstration sport. Two decades later the sport was officially introduced to the Olympics in 1989, and debuted in competition at the 1992 Summer Olympics, 1992 Games where 4 events were held, with singles and doubles events for both men and women. Four medals were awarded in each event, including two bronzes. At the following Games in 1996 Summer Olympics, 1996, had 5 events with the addition of mixed doubles. Joanne Goode
Joanne Gwendoline "Jo" Goode MBE (née Wright; born 17 November 1972) is a former English badminton player. She represented Great Britain at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, and won the 2000 mixed doubles bronze medal with Simon Archer. Goode also won seven gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, a gold at the European Championships, and a silver at the World Championships. Career Goode competed in badminton at the 2000 Summer Olympics in mixed doubles with Simon Archer and won a bronze medal. She also played in women's doubles with Donna Kellogg losing in the quarterfinals against Gao Ling and Qi Yiyuan. Archer and Goode won gold medals twice at the Commonwealth Games in 1998 and 2002. Simon Archer (badminton)
Simon David Archer MBE (born 27 June 1973) is an English former badminton player. Archer once held the world record for the fastest smash at 162 mph. Career Summer Olympics Archer competed in badminton at the 1996 Summer Olympics in doubles, with Chris Hunt. They were knocked out in the quarterfinals. In 2000 he coupled with Nathan Robertson, but they too lost in the quarterfinals, this time to Tony Gunawan and Candra Wijaya of Indonesia. However, Archer also competed in mixed doubles with Joanne Goode and won a bronze medal. Commonwealth Games He represented England and won double silver in the mixed doubles and men's doubles event and was a member of the mixed team that won the gold medal, at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada. Minarti Timur (; 24 March 1968) is a former Indonesian badminton player who is affiliated with PB Djarum since 1987. Career Though she won women's singles at the 1990 Dutch Open, Minarti was primarily a doubles player, particularly excelling in mixed doubles. During the 1990s and the early 2000s (decade), she won numerous international mixed doubles titles, the majority with Tri Kusharjanto but also, later, with Bambang Suprianto. Zhang Jun (badminton)
Zhang Jun (; born November 26, 1977 in Suzhou, Jiangsu) is a former male badminton player from the People's Republic of China. He is now a coach with the Chinese national team following his retirement from international play. Career As a doubles specialist, the solidly built Zhang Jun won several international men's doubles titles with compatriot Zhang Wei including the Swiss (1998), China (2001), and Thailand (2005) Opens. However, the majority of his titles, and the most prestigious ones, came in mixed doubles with the formidable Gao Ling. These included consecutive gold medals at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, earned by surviving a number of tight matches, particularly in 2000 when they were on the verge of elimination in the semifinals. Qin Yiyuan
Qin Yiyuan (; born 14 February 1973) is a Chinese former world level badminton player. Qin played internationally for China from the mid-1990s through the 2000 Summer Olympics, a period during which her fellow countrywomen Ge Fei and Gu Jun dominated international women's doubles play. Qin won women's doubles at the 1996 China Open, 1997 Thailand Open, 1998 Denmark Open with Tang Yongshu, and at the 1999 Thailand, French, and Denmark Opens, and 2000 Swiss Open with Gao Ling. She was a bronze medalist at the 1995 IBF World Championships and a silver medalist at the 1997 IBF World Championships with Tang Yongshu. She earned a bronze medal again at the 1999 edition of the tourney with Gao Ling. Gao Ling
Gao Ling (; born 14 March 1979) is a Chinese former badminton player. Career Noted for her consistency, anticipation, forecourt prowess, and sporting smile, Gao is one of the most successful doubles players in the history of women's badminton. Her four Olympic badminton medals are the most of any player. She has won titles at almost every top tier tournament in the world. Gao has earned four gold medals (among nine medals in total) at the BWF World Championships, three of them in women's doubles with Huang Sui (2001, 2003, and 2006) and one of them in mixed doubles with Zhang Jun (2001).
