Black Armband
In Western culture, a black armband signifies that the wearer is in mourning or wishes to identify with the commemoration of a family friend, comrade or team member who has died. This use is particularly common in the first meeting following the loss of a member. In sport, especially association football and cricket, players will often wear black armbands following the death of former player or manager. Black armbands are also worn by uniformed organisations, such as the police, fire services or military, at the funeral of a comrade or on the death of a sovereign. Black Band (landsknechts)
The Black Band was a formation of 16th century mercenaries, largely pikemen, probably serving as Landsknechts. They fought in the French army for ten years, seeing service in several notable engagements, including the Battle of Marignano and the Battle of Pavia. Origin The Black Band was created as the Black Guard in 1514 by George, Duke of Saxony, to fight for his claims in East Frisia against Edzard I, Count of East Frisia, in what was to become known as the Saxon feud. It is not clear whether the band was newly founded or a continuation of the ''Great'' or ''Black Guard'' that had been founded in 1488 by Landsknechts formerly in Imperial service with Maximilian in Flanders. It fought in Northern Germany and Denmark, often against rebellious peasants, until its defeat at the Battle of Hemmingstedt on 17 February 1500. It is possible that at least some Fähnlein of the Black Guard survived during these fourteen years and were part, if not core, of the new formation. This ...

Black Band (resistance Group)
The Black Band (german: link=no, Schwarze Scharen) were resistance groups of anarchist and anarcho-syndicalist youth and young adults in the last years of the Weimar Republic. History In many German cities there were small groups of the youth organization Syndicalist-Anarchist Youth of Germany (SAJD) of the Free Workers' Union of Germany (FAUD) in the 1920s and 1930s. As a protection force against the growing National Socialist movement and communist disruptive activities, local clandestine anti-fascist organizations, known as black bands, were founded from 1929 onwards, mostly equipped with few weapons and explosives.''Die 'Schwarzen Scharen': Eine »paramilitärische« Reaktion auf den entstehenden Nationalsozialismus.''

Black Band Disease
Black band disease is a coral disease in which corals develop a black band. It is characterized by complete tissue degradation due to a pathogenic microbial consortium. The mat is present between apparently healthy coral tissue and freshly exposed coral skeleton. Appearance Black band disease was first observed on reefs in Belize in 1973 by A. Antonius, who described the pathogen he found infecting corals as '' Oscillatoria membranacea'', one of the cyanobacteria. The band color may be blackish brown to red depending on the vertical position of a cyanobacterial population associated with the band. The vertical position is based on a light intensity-dependent photic response of the cyanobacterial filaments, and the color (due to the cyanobacterial pigment phycoerythrin) is dependent on the thickness of the band. The band is approximately thick and ranges in width from to White specks may be present on surface, at times forming dense white patches. The pathogenic microbial mat ...

Black Bands
The Black Bands ( it, Bande Nere), sometimes referred to as the Black Bands of Giovanni, was a company of Italian mercenaries formed and commanded by Giovanni de' Medici during the Italian Wars; their name came from their black mourning colors for the death of Pope Leo X. Composed primarily of arquebusiers—including Europe's first mounted arquebusiers—the company was, by the Italian War of 1521, considered to be the finest Italian troops available. Initially in the service of Charles de Lannoy and the Pope, the company fought at Bicocca in 1522 and the Sesia in 1523. A pay dispute led to it transferring its allegiance to Francis I of France; it took part in the battle of Pavia under the command of Richard de la Pole (d. 1525), known as the "White Rose". In addition to the Italian units, German mercenaries in service of Francis I were called the "German black bands". At the start of the War of the League of Cognac, the Bands attempted to resist the advance of Georg Frundsber ...
