Pal Benko
Pál C. Benkő ( hu, Benkő Pál; July 15, 1928 – August 26, 2019) was a Hungarian Americans, Hungarian-American chess player, author, and Chess composer, composer of Endgame study, endgame studies and chess problems. Early life Benko was born on July 15, 1928 in Amiens, France, where his Hungarian parents were on vacation. He was raised in Kingdom of Hungary (1920–1946), Hungary. Benko learned to play chess aged eight from his father, but did not compete in tournaments until age 17, due to World War II. During the war, he dug ditches for the Hungarian army before being captured by the Soviet army, which forced him to be a laborer. He eventually escaped to his home, only to find that his brother and father had been sent to Russia as laborers, and his mother died as the war neared its conclusion. Leon Benko (; born 11 November 1983) is a Croatian professional footballer who plays as a forward for NK Varteks. A product of NK Varteks youth academy, Benko had spells abroad in the German Bundesliga with 1. FC Nürnberg and in Belgium with Standard Liège and K.V. Kortrijk. Fabian Benko (born 5 June 1998) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Bayernliga Süd club FC Pipinsried. Born in Germany, Benko has represented both Germany and Croatia internationally at the junior level. Lindsay Dianne Benko (born November 29, 1976), also known by her married name as Lindsay Mintenko, is an American former competition swimmer, Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder. She represented the United States at the 2000 Summer Olympics and 2004 Summer Olympics. Gregor Benko (born August 4, 1944 Cleveland, Ohio, United States) is an American writer, lecturer, record producer, and collector-historian whose primary focus is classical piano performance documented on recordings from (or having to do with) the Romantic Era. His work helped lay the groundwork for the "Romantic Revival," which continued on into the 21st century. He was the founder, along with Albert Petrak, of the International Piano Archives (initially named the International Piano Library but later changed due to state law). Benko managed the non-profit institution for two decades, attracting Spanish virtuosa Alicia de Larrocha to act as the President of the corporation, and building an enormous collection of recordings, scores, memorabilia and associated matter concerning concert pianists. Gregory Benko (born 9 October 1952) is a retired Australian Foil (fencing), foil Fencing, fencer who competed at four Olympic Games. After participating in the 1972 Summer Olympics, Benko was recruited as a member of the Wayne State University men's fencing team. He earned three varsity letters and three national championships in individual foil (1974, 1975, and 1976), a record at the time. Benko participated in several international tournaments over the years, notably winning the 1975 Martini & Rossi Invitational in New York and the 1982 Paris Invitational, and earning the gold medal in foil and épée at the 1978 British Commonwealth Games. He also participated in the 1976, 1980 and 1984 Summer Olympic Games. Benko was a finalist at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, the only Australian fencer to achieve that feat. Aleksandar Benko
Aleksandar Benko (16 February 1925 – 26 May 1991) was a Croatian footballer who played one game internationally for both the Yugoslavia and Croatia national teams. CLub career A striker, he began his career with NK Čakovec in 1943, and in 1947 moved to Dinamo Zagreb with whom he won the Yugoslav Federal League in 1948, 1954 and 1958. In 1958 he moved to Switzerland where he played for Grasshopper (1958–59), Lugano (1959–60), Wohlen (1961–63) and St. Gallen (1963–67). There he remained for the rest of his life. The King's Fianchetto Opening or Benko's Opening (also known as the Hungarian Opening, Barcza Opening, or Bilek Opening) is a chess opening characterized by the move: :1. b:Chess Opening Theory/1. g3, g3 White's 1.g3 ranks as the fifth most popular opening move, but it is far less popular than 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4 and 1.Nf3. It is usually followed by 2.Bg2, fianchettoing the bishop (chess), bishop.
