Baseball At The 1936 Summer Olympics
Baseball was again a demonstration sport at the 1936 Summer Olympics after a 24-year absence. Both of the teams that played in Berlin were from the United States. The exhibition game was played on 12 August 1936 in front of 90,000 spectators in Berlin's Olympic Stadium. The two teams were named the "World Champions" and the "U. S. Olympics". The World Champions won, 6–5. Leslie Mann, who had pushed strongly for inclusion of baseball as an Olympic sport, was the umpire. Game result Source: Shaw hit a two-run home run in the first inning. At the end of six innings, the World Champions led, 5–4. The Olympics scored in the seventh to tie the game before McNeece hit a solo walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. Sayles was the starting pitcher for the World Champions, relieved by Thompson after giving up four runs in the first two innings. Paul Amen
Paul Johannes Amen (July 6, 1916 – June 4, 2005) was a prominent Nebraskan with notable accomplishments in both athletics and banking. He served as the head football coach at Wake Forest University from 1956 to 1959, compiling a record of 11–26–3. Amen was also the head baseball coach at the United States Military Academy from 1943 to 1954, tallying a mark of 133–76–7. Playing career Amen lettered in football, basketball, and baseball at the University of Nebraska. He was a member of the first U.S. Olympic baseball team at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin and played in the minor leagues in 1938 and 1939 before ending his athletic playing career. Coaching career Amen earned a master's degree in education from the University of Nebraska in 1940 while an assistant football coach there under Biff Jones. ''The Arizona Republic'' is an American daily newspaper published in Phoenix. Circulated throughout Arizona, it is the state's largest newspaper. Since 2000, it has been owned by the Gannett newspaper chain. Copies are sold at $2 daily or at $3 on Sundays and $5 on Thanksgiving Day; prices are higher outside Arizona. William Nisbeth Sayles (July 27, 1917 – November 20, 1996) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball who played with the Boston Red Sox in the 1939 season, and for the New York Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943.
