North American area code 602 is a state of Arizona telephone area code that covers most of the city of Phoenix. Originally established as Arizona's only area code, splits in 1995 and 1999 cleaved off numbers outside of metropolitan Phoenix (now in area codes 520 and 928) and the eastern and western portions of the metropolitan area (creating area codes 480 and 623, respectively). In 2023, 480 and 623 are scheduled to be turned into overlay area codes for most of metropolitan Phoenix, effectively reversing the 1999 split. This will result in the implementation of mandatory 10-digit dialing in the current 602 and 623 areas. Prescott, Arizona
Prescott ( ) is a city in Yavapai County, Arizona, United States. According to the 2020 Census, the city's population was 45,827. The city is the county seat of Yavapai County. In 1864, Prescott was designated as the capital of the Arizona Territory, replacing the temporary capital of Fort Whipple. The Territorial Capital was moved to Tucson in 1867. Prescott again became the Territorial Capital in 1877, until Phoenix became the capital in 1889. Prescott has a rich history as a frontier gold and silver mining town. The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of its members into geographic numbering plan areas (NPAs). North American area code 623 is a state of Arizona telephone area code serving most of the western portion of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was created in a split from area code 602 on March 1, 1999, when it was evident that the Valley of the Sun was expanding too rapidly to remain in one area code. Generally, the West Valley and the outer northwestern suburbs became 623, the eastern suburbs and the Phoenix neighborhood of Ahwatukee became area code 480, and inner Phoenix remained in 602. Although most of the state outside the Valley had been split off as area code 520 in 1995, the Valley's continued explosive growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers brought 602 to the brink of exhaustion far sooner than expected. North American area code 480 is a telephone area code in Arizona serving the eastern and northern portions of the Phoenix metropolitan area. It was created on March 1, 1999, in a three-way split of area code 602, when it was apparent that the Valley of the Sun was growing too fast for it to remain entirely in one area code. Generally, 480 is coextensive with the East Valley, while most of the West Valley is area code 623 and most of Phoenix itself remained in 602. By the turn of the millennium, 602 was running out of numbers just four years after all of the state outside of the Valley of the Sun was split off as area code 520. This group is historically known as World Zone 1 and has the international calling code ''1''. Some North American countries, most notably Mexico, do not participate in the NANP. Number pooling is a method of reallocating telephony numbering space in the North American Numbering Plan, primarily in growth areas in the United States. Instead of allocating blocks of ten thousand numbers to each carrier in each community, a block of ten thousand numbers is assigned to an individual geographic rate center. That block is then split into ten blocks of a thousand numbers each, which can be separately assigned to competitive local exchange carriers by a number pooling administrator. This reduces the quantity of wasted numbers in markets which have been fragmented between multiple carriers. Ahwatukee Foothills (also Ahwatukee) is an urban village of Phoenix, Arizona. Ahwatukee forms the southernmost portion of Phoenix, and is considered part of the East Valley region of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Arizona Corporation Commission is the Public Utilities Commission of the State of Arizona, established by Article 15 of the Arizona Constitution. Arizona is one of only fourteen states with elected commissioners.
