Area Code 403
Area code 403 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the Canadian province of Alberta. The numbering plan area encompasses the southern third of the province, which includes the Calgary area. Its numbering plan area (NPA) originally comprised the entire province of Alberta, the Yukon, and the western half of the Northwest Territories. It was the second-largest numbering plan area in the North American Numbering Plan and spanned more than one ninth of the circumference of the planet, from the 49th parallel north to the North Pole. On October 3, 1997, the numbering plan area was reduced to Alberta, and the Canadian territories were split off with the new area code 867. Within only a year, area code 403 was threatened by exhaustion bec ...

Ten-digit Dialing
Ten-digit dialing is a telephone dialing procedure in the countries and territories that are members of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). It is the practice of including the area code of a telephone number when dialing to initiate a telephone call. When necessary, the ten-digit number may be prefixed with the trunk code ''1'', which is referred to as ''1+10-digit dialing'' or ''national format''. History The implementation and expansion of the North American Numbering Plan between 1947 and 1992 preserved a long-standing practice in the United States and Canada that callers should only need to dial the local seven-digit telephone number when placing a call within the caller's exchange area or within the home numbering plan area (NPA). In seven-digit dialing. callers dialed the three-digit central office code and the four-digit station number of the telephone subscriber to reach in the same numbering plan area. Dialing of an area code before the telephone number, referred to ...

Area Code 587
Area codes 587, 825, and 368 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Alberta. They form an overlay with both of the previously existing area code 403 of southern Alberta, and northern Alberta's 780. Telephone numbers in area code 587 were allocated starting in late 2008. The complex overlay involving a total of five area codes in Alberta mandated ten-digit dialing throughout Alberta. History Prior to 1997, numbering plan area 403 comprised Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories, as well as a very small western portion of what is today Nunavut (which split off from the Northwest Territories on 1 April 1999). In 1997, area code 403 began serving exclusively Alberta, with all other portions of 403 (as well as the portion of area code 819 that had served the region that is today's Nunavut but at the was still part of the Northwest Territories) splitting off into a new area code 867. In January 1999, the northe ...
