Cities served include Angola, Auburn, Bluffton, Butler, Columbia City, Decatur, Fort Wayne, Huntington, New Haven, and Wabash. Indiana was divided to receive two area codes. Area code 317 served the northern two-thirds of Indiana, while area code 812 served the southern third. In the first change of the original plan in 1948, 317 was cut back to central Indiana, while the northern third of Indiana, including Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, South Bend, Elkhart and Fort Wayne, received area code 219. Eventual depletion of numbers in area code 219 in the late 1990s prompted a three-way split of 219. As the result of a random drawing, northwest Indiana ret ...

Original North American Area Codes
The original North American area codes were established by the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1947, following the demonstration of regional Operator Toll Dialing during the World War II period. The program had the goal of speeding the connecting times for long-distance calling by eliminating intermediary telephone operators. Expanding this technology for national use required a comprehensive and universal, continent-wide telephone numbering plan. The new numbering plan established a uniform destination addressing and call routing system for all telephone networks in North America which had become an essential public service. It had the eventual benefit of direct distance dialing (DDD) by telephone subscribers. The initial ''Nationwide Numbering Plan'' of 1947 established eighty-six numbering plan areas (NPAs) that principally followed existing U.S. state and Canadian provincial boundaries, but fifteen states and provinces were subdivided further. Forty NPAs wer ...

Area Codes 937 And 326
Area codes 937 and 326 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) assigned to a numbering plan area (NPA) that encompasses much of the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio, including Dayton and Springfield. Area code 937 was established in September 1996, after a split of area code 513. Area code 326 was added to area code 937 in an overlay plan in March 2020. History Area code 937 was created in a split of Ohio's original NPA for the southwestern part of the state (area code 513) on September 28, 1996. At the time, literature promoting the new area code took advantage of the fact that the digits of ''937'' spell out "YES" on a standard telephone keypad. As of April 2018, projections by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator expected that telephone exchanges ("central office codes") would be exhausted for area code 937 by the third quarter of 2020, so on July 3, 2018, area code 326 (which spells out "DAO" as in "DAyton, Ohio") was plann ...

Area Codes 419 And 567
Area codes 419 and 567 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Ohio. The largest city served by these area codes is Toledo (and its suburbs of Holland, Maumee, Northwood, Oregon, Ottawa Hills, Perrysburg, Rossford, Sylvania, Swanton, Waterville, and Whitehouse). History The first nationwide telephone numbering plan of 1947 divided Ohio into four numbering plan areas (NPAs), roughly forming a quadrant layout for telecommunication services in the state. Area code 419 was assigned to the northwest quadrant in the state. The overlay area code 567 was created on January 1, 2002. Despite the presence of Toledo, the state's fourth-largest city, 419 was the last of Ohio's original four numbering plan areas to be split or overlaid. However, because of the choice of an overlay, it is the only one of Ohio's original four NPAs, and one of the few original NPAs not covering an entire state, that still has ...
