Alba Iulia (; german: Karlsburg or ''Carlsburg'', formerly ''Weißenburg''; hu, Gyulafehérvár; la, Apulum) is a city that serves as the seat of Alba County in the west-central part of Romania. Located on the Mureș River in the historical region of Transylvania, it has a population of 63,536 (). During ancient times, the site was the location of the Roman camp Apulum. Since the High Middle Ages, the city has been the seat of Transylvania's Roman Catholic diocese. Between 1542 and 1690 it was the capital of the principality of Transylvania. Apulum (conurbation)
The conurbation of Apulum was a major urban centre of Roman Dacia, nowadays completely covered by the city of Alba Iulia. Two towns developed in the vicinity of the castrum of Apulum: Colonia Aurelia Apulensis, a pagus of Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, located south of the castrum on the bank of Marisus river which was raised to the status of colonia during Commodus(177-192), and Nova Apulensis which developed closer to the castrum and which was also raised to colonia from the time of Septimius Severus(193-211) and named municipium Septimium Apulense in his honour. The conurbation extended over 140 ha in the 3rd century with an estimated population between 15,000 and 20,000. National Museum Of Unification Alba Iulia
The National Museum of the Union ( ro, Muzeul Național al Unirii) is a history and archaeology museum in Alba-Iulia, Romania. History The museum was inaugurated in 1888 upon the initiative of the Historical, Archaeological and Natural Sciences Society of the Lower Alba County, having the famous archaeologist Adalbert Cserni as headmaster. In 1929, under the aegis of the ASTRA Association, it was organized as the ''Museum of the Union''. Valuable artefacts further enriched the rich archaeological collections and a new collection of items belonging to the modern history of the Romanians was added. In 1938, under the lead of the historian Ion Berciu, the settlement came to be managed by the Romanian state under the new name of ''Alba Regional Museum''.
