Auxiliary Interstate Highway
Auxiliary Interstate Highways (also called three-digit Interstate Highways) are a supplemental subset of the freeways within the Interstate Highway System of the United States. Auxiliary routes are generally classified as spur routes, which connect to the parent route at one end, bypasses, which connect to the parent route at both ends, or beltways, which form a complete circle intersecting the parent route at two locations. There are 323 auxiliary Interstates in the United States. There are some routes which connect to the parent route at one end, but connect to another route at the other end; some states treat these as spurs while others treat them as bypasses. Similar to the mainline Interstate Highways, these highways also meet all Interstate Highway standards (with rare exceptions), and they receive the same percentage of federal funding (90%). The shorter auxiliary routes branch off main routes and are numbered based on the number of the parent route. All of the supple ... Highway Shield
A highway shield or route marker is a sign denoting the route number of a highway, usually in the form of a symbolic shape with the route number enclosed. As the focus of the sign, the route number is usually the sign's largest element, with other items on the sign rendered in smaller sizes or contrasting colors. Highway shields are used by travellers, commuters, and all levels of government for identifying, navigating, and organising routes within a county, state, province, or country. Simplified highway shields often appear on maps. Purposes There are several distinct uses for the highway shield: * Junction signs inform travelers that they are approaching an intersection with a numbered highway. * Guide signs inform travelers which way to go at intersections, usually with an arrow pointing the way. These include: ** Directional assemblies, which combine highway shields with separate cardinal direction signs and arrow signs on the same post, and ** Direction, position, or in ... At first, I-540 was a short spur connecting Fort Smith and Van Buren to I-40 as one of the original five Arkansas Interstates. The route was extended north to Mountainburg in the late 1990s on an all-new alignment (going under concurrency with I-40, one of the only auxiliary routes with a concurrency with its parent) with the route being completed to Bella Vista in January 1999. However, the segment north of I-40 became a part of I-49 in 2014. Route description The older portion of I-540, completed in the 1970s, connects I-40 southward to the Ok ...
