Ash (band)
Ash are a Northern Irish rock band formed in Downpatrick in 1992 by vocalist and guitarist Tim Wheeler, bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer Rick McMurray. As a three-piece, they released mini-album '' Trailer'' in 1994 and full-length album '' 1977'' in 1996. This 1996 release was named by ''NME'' as one of the 500 greatest albums of all time. After the success of their full debut the band recruited Charlotte Hatherley as a guitarist and vocalist, releasing their second record ''Nu-Clear Sounds'' in 1998. After narrowly avoiding bankruptcy, the band released ''Free All Angels'' in 2001 and a string of successful singles. The band became a three-piece again in 2006 when Hatherley left, and after five conventional albums the band released 26 singles in the ''A-Z Series'' in 2009, one every two weeks. Downpatrick
Downpatrick () is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It is on the Lecale peninsula, about south of Belfast. In the Middle Ages, it was the capital of the Dál Fiatach, the main ruling dynasty of Ulaid. Its cathedral is said to be the burial place of Saint Patrick. Today, it is the county town of Down and the joint headquarters of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council. Downpatrick had a population of 10,822 according to the 2011 Census. ''Free All Angels'' is the third studio album to be recorded by Northern Irish Rock music, rock band Ash (band), Ash. It was released on 23 April 2001 through Infectious Records and Home Grown. Due to the mixed reaction to the band's second studio album ''Nu-Clear Sounds'' (1998), frontman Tim Wheeler suffered from Depression (mood), depression. He went to his parents' house in Northern Ireland to write material for the band's next album. Petrol (1994 Single)
"Petrol" is a song by Northern Irish rock band Ash, released as the second single from their 1994 mini-album, '' Trailer'', and as their first single on Infectious Records. It was released on 15 August 1994 on CD and 7-inch vinyl format. Only 500 copies of the 7-inch format were released and came with a numbered picture sleeve. The song reached number 96 on the UK Singles Chart in 1994, becoming their first single to reach the UK top 100. "Petrol" was first recorded on the "Garage Girl" demo tape and later appeared on Ash's debut live album, ''Live at the Wireless'', and again on Ash's first greatest hits collection, "Intergalactic Sonic 7″s". The song is said to be about being "lynched" by a gang. B-sides B-side "The Little Pond" first appeared on the "Garage Girl" demo-tape. Tim Wheeler has expressed his dissatisfaction with this recording, and has even mentioned re-recording it as an acoustic B-side on a future album. Stephen Paul Lamacq (born 16 October 1964), sometimes known by his nickname Lammo (given to him by John Peel), is an English disc jockey, currently working with the BBC radio station BBC Radio 6 Music. Early life He attended The Ramsey Academy from 1976, which had been formed the previous year from two grammar schools. He was brought up in the Essex village of Colne Engaine. Gramophone Record
A phonograph record (also known as a gramophone record, especially in British English), or simply a record, is an analog sound storage medium in the form of a flat disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove. The groove usually starts near the periphery and ends near the center of the disc. At first, the discs were commonly made from shellac, with earlier records having a fine abrasive filler mixed in. Starting in the 1940s polyvinyl chloride became common, hence the name vinyl. The phonograph record was the primary medium used for music reproduction throughout the 20th century. Jack Names The Planets (1994 Single)
"Jack Names the Planets" is the debut single by Ash, released in February 1994. The single was originally released on vinyl only and is entirely different from the album version that appears on their EP, '' Trailer''. The single was re-released on 2 December 2002 in CD format as a limited edition with the Raptor 12" version of "Season" as an extra B-side, as part of the promotion for the ''Intergalactic Sonic 7″s'' greatest hits collection. The song first appeared on the ''Shed'' demo tape, recorded in 1992 and again on the ''Garage Girl'' and '' Pipe Smokin' Brick'' demo-tapes. Ash were first signed when a copy of ''Garage Girl'' was given to Stephen 'Tav' Tavner, who signed them on the basis of "Jack Names the Planets". Only 2,000 copies of the single were released, and the single was recorded on a £300 budget. Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris.
