Archdeacon Of Croydon
The Archdeacon of Croydon is a senior ecclesiastical officer within the Diocese of Southwark. As such the deacon is responsible for the disciplinary supervision of the clergy within its five rural deaneries: Croydon Addington, Croydon Central, Croydon North, Croydon South and Sutton. History The archdeaconry was created in the Diocese of Canterbury from the Archdeaconry of Maidstone by Order in Council on 1 April 1930 and transferred to the Diocese of Southwark on 1 January 1985. Maurice Harland
Maurice Henry Harland (17 April 1896 – 29 September 1986) was a 20th-century Anglican bishop, his most significant appointment being Bishop of Durham from 1956 to 1966. He was one of nine Diocesan bishops in England in the 1950s who had served as combatants in the Great War Early life Harland was born on 17 April 1896, the son of the Revd William George and Clara Elizabeth Harland and educated at St Peter's School, York. He went straight from school in 1914 as a volunteer to the West Yorkshire Regiment soon after the First World War broke out. He joined the Royal Field Artillery as a lieutenant in France in 1915, and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. He was a Flying Officer Observer from June 1917, then a Flying Officer and from April 1918 a Lieutenant. Rosemarie Mallett
Marlene Rosemarie Mallett (born 1959) is a British Anglican bishop and sociologist. Since June 2022, she has served as the Bishop of Croydon, an area bishop in the Diocese of Southwark. Before ordination in the Church of England, she was a research sociologist and academic, specialising in international development and ethno-cultural mental health. Christopher John Skilton (born 19 March 1955) is a former Archdeacon of Croydon and Archdeacon of Lambeth. He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge and ordained in 1981. After curacies at Ealing and Wimborne he became Team Vicar of St Paul's Great Baddow. From 1995 to 2003 he was the Team Rector of Sanderstead. Frederick Hazell
Frederick Roy Hazell (12 August 1930 - 16 July 2019) was an Anglican priest who was the Archdeacon of Croydon from 1978 to 1993. Hazell was educated at Hutton Grammar School and Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Brought up in the Exclusive Brethren, he was disowned by his family when he became an Anglican. He trained for ordination at Cuddesdon and was ordained deacon in 1956 and priest in 1957. His served his title at St Mary's Church, Ilkeston (1956–59) and St Lawrence, Heanor (1959–62) after which he was Vicar of All Saints', Marlpool (1962–63). He was Chaplain of the University of the West Indies from 1963 to 1966 then an Assistant Priest at St Martin-in-the-Fields. John Taylor Hughes (12 April 190821 July 2001) was an Anglican bishop in the 20th century. Hughes was educated firstly in Uxbridge and subsequently at Bede College, University of Durham. He was ordained as a deacon at Michaelmas 1931 (26 September) at Auckland Castle and as a priest in Advent the next year (18 December 1932) at Durham Cathedral — both times by Hensley Henson, Bishop of Durham; and was successively an assistant chaplain and tutor at his former college, a curate at Shildon and a vicar at West Hartlepool. Harold Bradfield
Harold William Bradfield (20 September 18981 May 1960) was an Anglican bishop who served as Bishop of Bath and Wells from 1946 to 1960. Harold was born in Lambeth, an only child whose father was a ‘Club and Smoking Room worker. He was at school at Dulwich College, and was 18 when he joined the City of London Yeomanry and the Army Cyclist Corps. He served in France in 1918-19 and, after the Great War ended, he was awarded the Victory and British War Medals. In 1922, he completed a Batchelor of Divinity degree at King's College, London, and was ordained and served in Lancashire as a curate and Vicar of St Mark’s, Heyside. The Diocese of Southwark is one of the 42 dioceses of the Church of England, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The diocese forms part of the Province of Canterbury in England. It was created on 1 May 1905 from part of the ancient Diocese of Rochester that was served by a suffragan bishop of Southwark (1891–1905). Before 1877 the area was part of the Diocese of Winchester.
