''Public Image: First Issue'' is the debut studio album by English rock band Public Image Ltd, released in 1978 by record label Virgin Records, Virgin. It is considered one of the pioneering records in the development of post-punk. Recording "Public Image" "Public Image (song), Public Image", the debut single, was recorded first. Recording started on a Monday in mid-July 1978 (most probably 10 or 17 July) at Advision Studios with engineer John Leckie and assistant engineer Ken Thomas (record producer), Kenneth Vaughan Thomas. Public Image Ltd
Public Image Ltd (abbreviated and stylized as PiL) are an English post-punk band (and incorporated limited company) formed by singer John Lydon (previously known as the singer of Sex Pistols), guitarist Keith Levene, bassist Jah Wobble, and drummer Jim Walker in May 1978. The group's personnel has changed frequently over the years; Lydon has been the sole constant member. Following Lydon's departure from the Sex Pistols in January 1978, he sought a more experimental "anti-rock" project and formed PiL. That year PiL released their debut ''First Issue'' (1978), creating an abrasive, bass-heavy sound that drew on dub, noise, progressive rock and disco. PiL's second album ''Metal Box'' (1979) pushed their sound further into the avant-garde, and is often regarded as one of the most important albums of the post-punk era. Roland RE-201
The Roland RE-201, commonly known as the Space Echo, is an audio effects unit that produces delay and reverb effects. It was produced by the Roland Corporation from 1974 to 1990. Background A tape echo device records incoming audio to a loop of magnetic tape, then replays the continuous loop over the playback head before it is erased again by new incoming audio. The first commercial echo unit was the EchoSonic which had its own amplification and a delicate tape mechanism that required frequent attention. The design was improved in the Echoplex with adjustable echo delay. It provided a reliable and much smaller, portable package that could be used with any amplifier. Bonnie Simmons
Bonnie Simmons is a California based radio personality. Audio director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she is also a band manager, currently managing or having managed in the past Cake, Noe Venable and Etienne de Rocher. Simmons started at KSAN in 1968 as the record librarian, became music librarian, music director, on-air DJ, and by 1975, was the program director. Simmons is executive director of the Bill Graham Memorial Foundation. Simmons spent several years working as a sandwich-maker at Ozzie’s Soda Fountain in Berkeley. Piano Sonata No
The piano is a stringed keyboard instrument in which the strings are struck by wooden hammers that are coated with a softer material (modern hammers are covered with dense wool felt; some early pianos used leather). It is played using a keyboard, which is a row of keys (small levers) that the performer presses down or strikes with the fingers and thumbs of both hands to cause the hammers to strike the strings. Jim Walker (drummer)
Jim Walker (born 1955) is a Canadian musician who was a founding director as well as the original drummer for the UK music group Public Image Ltd. Early life and education James Donat Walker was born in Edmonton, Alberta. He first trained as a jazz drummer at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he was taught by Alan Dawson and Joe Hunt. Career In 1977, along with Malcolm Hasman and Chris Arnett he formed the Vancouver area punk band the Furies, the first punk rock band in Western Canada. The band broke up after a few months, and Walker moved to London later that year. In early May 1978, after answering an ad placed in ''Melody Maker'', he auditioned for and became a founding member of Public Image Ltd., with John Lydon, Keith Levene, and John Wardle (Jah Wobble). ''OOR'' is the oldest currently published music magazine in the Netherlands. ''Oor'' is the Dutch word for ear. Until 1984 it was published as ''Muziekkrant Oor''. Don Letts
Donovan "Don" Letts (born 10 January 1956) is a British film director, disc jockey (DJ) and musician. Letts first came to prominence as the videographer for the Clash, directing several of their music videos. In 1984, Letts co-founded the band Big Audio Dynamite with former Clash lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist Mick Jones (The Clash guitarist), Mick Jones, acting as the band's Sampling (music), sampler and videographer before departing the band in 1990. Sex Pistols
The Sex Pistols were an English punk rock band formed in London in 1975. Although their initial career lasted just two and a half years, they were one of the most groundbreaking acts in the history of popular music. Mick Glossop is an English record producer and recording engineer. In 2009, he was awarded a Visiting Professorship at Leeds College of Music. Glossop was initially known for recording and producing for New wave music, new wave and Punk rock, punk bands such as Magazine (band), Magazine, Public Image Ltd, the Ruts, the Skids and Penetration (band), Penetration, but also had success working with many other artists, including roots reggae artist Delroy Washington, Kevin Coyne, the Waterboys, Furniture (band), Furniture, the Wonder Stuff, Frank Zappa, Paul Brady, Ian Gillan, RiTA, John Lee Hooker and Lloyd Cole. ''Melody Maker'' was a British weekly music magazine, one of the world's earliest music weeklies; according to its publisher, IPC Media, the earliest. ''New Musical Express'' (''NME'') is a British music, film, gaming, and culture website and brand. Founded as a newspaper in 1952, with the publication being referred to as a 'rock inkie', the NME would become a magazine that ended up as a free publication, before becoming an online brand which includes its website and radio stations. As a 'rock inkie', ''NME'' was the first British newspaper to include a singles chart, adding that feature in the edition of 14 November 1952. ''Uncut'' is a monthly magazine based in London. It is available across the English-speaking world, and focuses on music, but also includes film and books sections. A DVD magazine under the ''Uncut'' brand was published quarterly from 2005 to 2006. The magazine was acquired in 2019 by Singaporean music company BandLab Technologies, and has been published by NME Networks since December 2021.
