Złota Maska (film)
''Złota Maska'' (Polish for ''Golden Mask'') is a Polish melodrama film directed by Jan Fethke based on two novels by Tadeusz Dołęga-Mostowicz. Although shot and scheduled for release in 1939, the post-production was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, the subsequent need to pass German censorship meant it received only limited release in occupied Poland in 1940. The copy which survived has altered credits and subplot removed — scenes with Igo Sym ( Nazi collaborator) were cut after the war. Jan Fethke
Jan Fethke (26 February 1903 – 16 December 1980) was a German-Polish film director and, under the pen name Jean Forge, a successful author. He also was a famous proponent of the language Esperanto. Life Born in Oppeln, Silesia, Jan Fethke attended Oppeln's grammar school. Together with his brothers Stefan and Edmond, Fethke learned Esperanto in 1919, when aged sixteen. After leaving grammar school, he edited the periodical ''Esperanto Triumfonta'' for several years. Between 1923 and 1924 studied at Technical University of Danzig and worked for a local newspaper before moving to Berlin. In 1921, aged 18, he penned his first novel, the German language ''Der ausgestopfte Papagei'' (''The Stuffed Parrot''). After 1923, he wrote his novels in Esperanto and used the pseudonym ''Jean Forge''. Collaboration With Nazi Germany And Fascist Italy
In World War II, many governments, organizations and individuals collaborated with the Axis powers, "out of conviction, desperation, or under coercion." Nationalists sometimes welcomed German or Italian troops, believing they brought liberation from colonization. The Danish, and Belgian and Vichy French governments attempted to appease or bargain with the invaders, in hopes of mitigating harm to their citizens and economies. Some countries cooperated with Italy and Germany because they wanted to regain territory lost during and after the First World War or which their nationalist citizens simply coveted. Others, such as France, already had strong fascist movements and/or anti-semitic sentiment, which the invaders validated and empowered. Andrzej Bogucki
Andrzej Bogucki (11 November 1904 – 29 July 1978) was a Polish television, stage and film actor, as well as operetta singer and songwriter, sometimes referred to as "The Polish Chevalier". Bogucki and his wife Janina née Godlewska (8 March 1908 – 19 June 1992) are known for helping and hiding the Polish Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Szpilman's life inspired the 2002 film '' The Pianist'', and both Bogucki and his wife were portrayed in the film. Although he lived in Warsaw for most of his life, Bogucki also worked in several other cities. He lived in Warsaw's Mariensztat neighborhood from 1947 until the end of his life, and he is buried in the Powązki Cemetery in the western part of Warsaw.
