''Zonocerus'' is a genus of African grasshoppers ( Caelifera) in the family Pyrgomorphidae and the tribe Phymateini. ''Zonocerus elegans'' is found in central, eastern and southern regions, including Madagascar, and ''Z. variegatus'' found in western regions. Description Both species are significant agricultural pests, defoliating crops of African smallholder farmers. Both adults and nymphs have relatively bright, aposematic colours, and adults typically are about long. ''Zonocerus variegatus'', the painted grasshopper or variegated grasshopper, is a species of insect belonging to the family Pyrgomorphidae. It is native to tropical Africa, and is considered a crop pest in much of Western and Central Africa. Description The adult grasshopper is extremely colourful, having large red compound eyes, a boldly patterned black, white, red and yellow body and legs, and greenish membranous wings. The nymphs also have red eyes, but lack wings and are black, with yellow and white markings. Distribution and habitat ''Zonocerus variegatus'' is native to tropical West and Central Africa. Pyrgomorphidae is a family of grasshoppers in the order Orthoptera; it is the only family in the superfamily Pyrgomorphoidea, with a pan-tropical distribution. Their name is probably derived from ''pyrgos'' (Greek: ''Πύργος'') meaning "tower": a reference to the form (''morph'') of the head in the type genus ''Pyrgomorpha'' and other genera. They may sometimes be known as "gaudy grasshoppers", due to the striking, often aposematic colouration of a number of genera; however many others are camouflaged or cryptic, including the genus ''Pyrgomorpha''. The Caelifera are a suborder of orthopteran insects. They include the grasshoppers and grasshopper-like insects, as well as other superfamilies classified with them: the ground-hoppers (Tetrigoidea) and pygmy mole crickets (Tridactyloidea). The latter should not be confused with the mole crickets (Gryllotalpidae), which belong to the other Orthopteran sub-order Ensifera. Carl Stål
Carl Stål (21 March 1833 – 13 June 1878) was a Swedish entomologist specialising in Hemiptera. He was born at Karlberg Castle, Stockholm on 21 March 1833 and died at Frösundavik near Stockholm on 13 June 1878. He was the son of architect, author and officer Carl Stål then Colonel, Swedish Corps of Engineers. He matriculated at Uppsala University in 1853, studying medicine and passing the medico-philosophical examination in 1857. He then turned to entomology and completed his Ph.D. at the University of Jena in 1859. The same year he became assistant to Carl Henrik Boheman in the Zoological department of the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, where, in 1867, he was appointed keeper with the title of professor.
