Ziv Television Programs, Inc. was an American production company that specialized in productions for first-run television syndication in the 1950s. History The company was founded by Frederick Ziv in 1948 and was a subsidiary of his successful radio syndication business, which had begun in 1937. The company produced recorded programs and sold them directly to local television stations. The television syndication service proved lucrative during the late 1940s and early 1950s, as local television stations wanted to fill their schedules during hours outside of "prime time". By 1955, Ziv was producing more than 250 half-hour TV episodes a year. As the Big Three television networks began offering programs outside of prime time, Ziv's popularity and business began to decline. Broadcast syndication is the practice of leasing the right to broadcasting television shows and radio programs to multiple television stations and radio stations, without going through a broadcast network. Gene Barry (born Eugene Klass, June 14, 1919 – December 9, 2009) was an American stage, screen, and television actor and singer. Jean Pierre Carl Buron (12 July 1886 – 2 June 1956), known professionally as Jean Hersholt, was a Danish-American actor. ''Dial 999'' is a British television series that ran for one series of 38 episodes from 1958 to 1959. The series was a co-production between ITV (TV channel), ITV contractor ABC Weekend TV, and American television producer Ziv Television Programs. It stars Robert Beatty as Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canadian Mountie Mike Maguire, and follows his work fighting crime alongside London's police. Named after the 999 (emergency telephone number), emergency telephone number for the United Kingdom, Beatty was essentially reprising his role in the 1946 film ''Appointment with Crime'', in which he played Detective Inspector Rogers, a Canadian police officer attached to Scotland Yard. Boston Blackie is a fictional character created by author Jack Boyle (1881–1928). Blackie, a jewel thief and safecracker in Boyle's stories, became a detective in adaptations for films, radio and television—an "enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend."
