Zion Baptist Church (Marietta, Georgia)
The Zion Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia is a Baptist church which was founded in 1866 by African American members of another Baptist church in the city. The current building, built in 1888, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. With History In 1865, African American members of First Baptist Church in Marietta, Georgia (many of whom had been slaves prior to the Civil War) petitioned the church for dismissal in order to form a black church under their own administration. This dismissal was granted the following year and Zion Baptist Church was officially founded on April 8, 1866, with Reverend Ephraim Rucker as the church's first pastor. The 88 original members of this congregation constructed a wooden church house on land donated by First Baptist. In 1888, this building was converted to a brick church building. Zion Baptist Church in Collinsville, Mississippi is a Carpenter Gothic church built in 1910–11. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic v ... (NRHP) in 2002. According to its NRHP nomination, it was deemed significant "because of the quality of its architectural detail as a rural, vernacular church built during the early 1900s, and its unusually high degree of integrity." The church building replaced a previous building on the site. Its property includes a cemetery with graves of immigrants from about 1860 on, including from England, Scotland, and Ireland. Zion Baptist Church (Omaha, Nebraska)
Zion Baptist Church is located at 2215 Grant Street in the Near North Side neighborhood of Omaha, Nebraska. The congregation is among the oldest in Nebraska, and has been instrumental for responding to much of the racial tension in Omaha. History Founded in 1884, the congregation became the city's largest African American church by the first decade of the 20th century. An incorporation of the church was announced in 1888, the incorporaters were Dr. W. H. C. Stephenson, W. Whitefield, S. H. Baxter, G. W. Kellog, R. Plenix, G. Young, A. Chapman, and D. A. Thomas. The present building was designed by Clarence W. Wigington and built in the wake of the Easter Sunday Tornado of 1913. Zion was integral to the community mobilization that happened previous to and following the Omaha Race Riot of 1919.
