Zig Zag Street
ZigZag Street is a 1996 novel written by Australian writer Nick Earls. It was Earl's second novel and won the Betty Trask Award in 1998, which it shared with Kiran Desai's Hullaballoo in the Guava Orchard. It has been compared with the work of Nick Hornby. It was adapted for the stage by Philip Dean in 2004, playing at the La Boite Theatre before touring other cities. Plot summary Richard Derrington is a 28 year old corporate lawyer in Brisbane struggling to cope after his girlfriend, Anna, has left him. He lives on Zig Zag Street in the suburb of Red Hill, Brisbane, Queensland in his grandmother's former home. The novel follows his life over a six-week period as he continues to "mess things up", before finding new purpose and new love. The novel features a number of Brisbane landmarks, including Broadway On the Mall, Park Road in Milton as well as the eponymous Zig Zag Street (). It references British band The Smiths. Nicholas Francis Ward Earls (born 8 October 1963) is a novelist from Brisbane, Australia, who writes humorous popular fiction about everyday life. The majority of his novels are set in his home town of Brisbane. He fronted a major Brisbane tourism campaign. Biography Earls was born on 8 October 1963 in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. He emigrated to Australia with his parents and sister at the age of nine. Living in Brisbane, he was educated at the Anglican Church Grammar School there. Broadway On The Mall
Broadway on the Mall was a four-storey shopping mall, located in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, between the Queen Street Mall and Adelaide Street in the Brisbane central business district. It was developed by Mace Developments and Jennings Industries in the late 1980s. Following the collapse of AV Jennings and a series of acquisitions, the centre has been owned by Industry Superannuation Property Trust since 2011. In 2011, the centre conducted a search for a fashion blogger to represent them on social media. On 31 August 2013, the centre closed to allow for a redevelopment of the tired retail space to commence. Tim Tam
Tim Tam is a brand of chocolate biscuit introduced by the Australian biscuit company Arnott's in 1964. It consists of two malted biscuits separated by a light hard chocolate cream filling and coated in a thin layer of textured chocolate. History The biscuit was created by Ian Norris and Alan Morrow. During 1958, they took a world trip looking for inspiration for new products. While in Britain, they found the Penguin biscuit and decided to try to "make a better one". Tim Tam went on to the market in 1964. They were named by Ross Arnott, who attended the 1958 Kentucky Derby and decided that the name of the winning horse, Tim Tam, was perfect for a planned new line of biscuits. The Smiths
The Smiths were an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. They comprised the singer Morrissey, the guitarist Johnny Marr, the bassist Andy Rourke and the drummer Mike Joyce. They are regarded as one of the most important acts to emerge from the 1980s British independent music scene. The Smiths signed to the independent label Rough Trade Records in 1983 and released their first album, ''The Smiths'', in 1984. Milton is a riverside inner suburb of the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , the population of Milton was 2,274 people. Geography Milton is approximately west of the central business district. The suburb is a mixture of light industry, warehouses, commercial offices, retail and single and multiple occupancy residences. Park Road Railway Station
Park Road railway station is the junction station for the Gold Coast and Cleveland lines in Queensland, Australia. It serves the Brisbane suburb of Woolloongabba. It is served by Beenleigh, Cleveland and Gold Coast line services. Immediately south of the station lies a triangle junction with the Cleveland and Fisherman Islands lines branching off. Betty Trask Award
The Betty Trask Prize and Awards are for first novels written by authors under the age of 35, who reside in a current or former Commonwealth nation. Each year the awards total £20,000, with one author receiving a larger prize amount, called the "Prize", and the remainder given to one or more other writers, called the "Awards". The award was established in 1984 by the Society of Authors, at the bequest of the late Betty Trask, a reclusive author of over thirty romance novels. Red Hill is an inner northern suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Red Hill had a population of 5,560 people. Geography Red Hill is by road north-west of the Brisbane CBD. The suburb is very hilly and mainly residential, with shops and small businesses located on Musgrave and Waterworks Roads. History The suburb is one of the oldest in Brisbane. Red Hill is named after its steep hills with red soil and rocks. A Baptist chapel was building in 1874. In 1888, the chapel was replaced by the Windsor Road Baptist Church.
