Zelma ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Morris No. 312 and Census Division No. 11. The village is located along Saskatchewan Highway 763. History Zelma incorporated as a village on August 10, 1910. The Zelma Church was built in 1909 with a load of lumber for $500 and volunteer labour. Initially a Presbyterian Church, it was reorganised in 1917 as the Zelma United Church. Until 1912, students were required to attend school in the neighbouring communities of Stonemount or Golden Wheat due to reluctance of many of the farmers (who were bachelors) in the area to vote in favour of spending tax money on a school. In 1912 the school district was established, originally using the church for classes until a one-room school house was constructed in 1925. The school closed in 1969, with students bussed to Young. Zelma Henderson (February 29, 1920 – May 20, 2008) was the last surviving plaintiff in the 1954 landmark federal school desegregation case, ''Brown v. Board of Education''. The case outlawed segregation nationwide in all of the United States' public schools. The ruling served as a harbinger of the American Civil Rights Movement and paved the way for the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which outlawed segregation in all public facilities. Early life Henderson was born as Zelma Cleota Hurst in Colby, Kansas, on February 29, 1920. Her family, the Hursts, were one of only two African American families living in Colby at the time. Rosa Zelma Huppatz (20 July 1906 – 13 December 1982), known as Zelma Huppatz, was a South Australian nurse and matron who served in the Middle East and Australia during World War II and then as matron of the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Early life and training Huppatz was born on 20 July 1906 in Peters Hill, South Australia. In 1930, Huppatz completed her surgical nursing training at the Adelaide Hospital with credit and passed her general nursing certificate the following year. Career After six years as staff sister at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Huppatz applied for overseas war service as a nurse. Zelma R. Long (born 1945) is an American enologist and vintner. She is considered to be one of the female pioneers in California wine, and was the first woman to assume senior management of a Californian winery, Simi Winery, of which she was president from 1989 to 1996. Long founded and was the first president of the American Vineyard Foundation to help finance research in enology and viticulture and also founded the American Viticulture and Enology Research Network (AVERN). She is the co-owner of Long Vineyards in St. Helena, California, and the Vilafonte Wine Estate in South Africa. Long has particularly been active in research into viticulture in Washington state.
