Zefania Carmel
Zefania Carmel (born December 21, 1940, in Baghdad, Iraq; died September 1980) was an Israeli yachting world champion. Yachting career Carmel partnered with Lydia Lazarov to win the Israeli yachting championship in 1966 in the 420-Class. They won the world championships in the Team 420 Non-Olympic Sailing Class in 1969. Carmel won the individual Israeli yachting championship in 1970. Death Carmel drowned during training in September 1980. Baghdad (; ar, بَغْدَاد , ) is the capital of Iraq and the second-largest city in the Arab world after Cairo. Yachting is the use of recreational boats and ships called ''yachts'' for racing or cruising. Yachts are distinguished from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose. "Yacht" derives from the Dutch word '' jacht'' ("hunt"). With sailboats, the activity is called sailing, and with motorboats, it is called powerboating. Racing History The history of sailing dates back to prehistoric times but the racing of sailing boats is believed to have started in the Netherlands some time in the 17th century. Lydia Lazarov
Lydia Lazarov (born January 16, 1946) is an Israeli former yachting world champion. Biography Lazarov is Jewish, and was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. Yachting career Lazarov and Zefania Carmel were teammates in the Zevulun Sailing Club in Bat Yam, Israel. International Jewish Sports Hall Of Fame
The International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame ( he, יד לאיש הספורט היהודי, translit=Yad Le'ish HaSport HaYehudi) was opened July 7, 1981 in Netanya, Israel. It honors Jewish athletes and their accomplishments from anywhere around the world. It is located at the Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sport. It has inducted over 400 athletes and sportspersons representing 40 countries. The Hall elects new honorees each year, with submissions due December 1 for votes for the following year, and a formal induction ceremony taking place several days prior to the Maccabiah Games every four years. The Hall was founded by Joseph M. Siegman, a television producer and writer who lives in Beverly Hills, California. He chaired the Hall from 1981 to 1989, and later served as chairman of its Selection Committee.
