Zeedijk
Zeedijk (''English'': "Sea dike") is a street in the old centre of Amsterdam. The street is the northern and eastern boundary of De Wallen red-light district and runs between Prins Hendrikkade and Nieuwmarkt. Historically an area riddled with crime and drug addicts, the area went through a revitalization and is now the main street of Amsterdam's Chinatown, where locals come to eat at Vietnamese, Thai and Chinese restaurants. The Zeedijk neighbourhood is also known as the Nautical Quarter (Dutch: ''Nautisch Kwartier'') because of its past as a sailors' neighbourhood. The zeedijk was constructed as seawall or ''dike'' to protect Amsterdam from the water of the IJ, which was in open connection with the Zuiderzee until 1872. Nam Kee
Nam Kee () is a chain of three Chinese restaurants in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The original restaurant opened at the Zeedijk in 1981 (currently at no. 111–113), followed by restaurants at the Geldersekade 117 in 1992 and at the Marie Heinekenplein 4 in 2010. The name means "Friend Nam" in Chinese, after the owner Nam Chan. Nam Kee is a favourite of many people in Amsterdam and a place to be seen, including by celebrities such as Rijk de Gooyer (deceased), Joop Braakhekke (deceased) and stars from ''Goede Tijden, Slechte Tijden'' and also artists and bank directors.() Nam Kee became nationally known in the Netherlands after writer Kees van Beijnum released his 2000 novel ''De Oesters van Nam Kee'' ("Oysters at Nam Kee's") which was subsequently made into a 2002 Dutch drama film. Café 't Mandje is a bar in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is located in Zeedijk street and was opened in 1927 by Bet van Beeren, herself a lesbian. The Amsterdam Museum holds the replica of 't Mandje. Kees Van Beijnum
Kees van Beijnum (born 21 March 1954 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch writer. He grew up in Amsterdam, where his mother had a bar near the Zeedijk. Before he became a writer, he was a journalist. He made his debut as a novelist in 1991 with ''Over het IJ'', a non-fiction novel about a murder case in Amsterdam. The novel ''De ordening'', published in 1998, was based on the life of Florentine Rost van Tonningen (1914-2007), a Dutch national-socialist who stood by her beliefs until her death. The book was adapted to film and was nominated for a Golden Calf award in 2003. He received the Ferdinand Bordewijk Prijs in 2001 for ''De Oesters van Nam Kee'' ("Oysters at Nam Kee's"), which was also longlisted for the Libris Prize. De Wallen () or De Walletjes () is the largest and best known red-light district in Amsterdam. It consists of a network of alleys containing approximately 300 one-room cabins rented by prostitutes who offer their sexual services from behind a window or glass door, typically illuminated with red lights and blacklight. Waag (Amsterdam)
The Waag ("weigh house") is a 15th-century building on Nieuwmarkt square in Amsterdam. It was originally a city gate and part of the walls of Amsterdam. Later it served as a guildhall, museum, fire station and anatomical theatre, among other things. The Waag is the oldest remaining non-religious building in Amsterdam. Chesney Henry "Chet" Baker Jr. (December 23, 1929 – May 13, 1988) was an American jazz trumpeter and vocalist.
