Zeb Alley
Zebulon Doyle "Zeb" Alley (August 9, 1928 – July 11, 2013) was an American lawyer, lobbyist, and politician. Born in Sylva, North Carolina, he graduated from high school at Oak Ridge Military Academy. Alley served in the United States Army during the Korean War and received the Bronze Star. He then received his bachelors and law degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and then practiced law and was a lobbyist. He served in the North Carolina State Senate 1971–1973 as a Democrat. Alley also was city attorney for Waynesville, North Carolina, general counsel to Governor Jim Hunt, and served on the North Carolina Board of Alcoholic Beverages. Sylva, North Carolina
Sylva is an incorporated town located in central Jackson County, in the Plott Balsam Mountains of Western North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 2,588. It is the county seat, taking over the role from nearby Webster in 1913. Etymology According to popular accounts, Sylva is named after William D. Sylva, a Danish handyman who spent a month in the home of General E. R. Hampton, who owned much of the land later developed as downtown Sylva. When the town applied for a post office, Hampton asked his young daughter Mae what the town's name should be. She liked the handyman so much she said, "Sylva." This account is disputed: according to a 21st-century investigation, the handyman William D. Sylva was not Danish, and it is likely that his surname was not Sylva. Oak Ridge Military Academy
Oak Ridge Military Academy (ORMA) is a college-preparatory military school in northwestern Guilford County, North Carolina. The school is the third oldest military academy in the United States and the first military boarding school to admit girls. The academy is located in the town of Oak Ridge, North Carolina, and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Oak Ridge was created in 1852 by locals who wanted to encourage education in Guilford County. The school was closed during the Civil War for four years, reopening in 1866. From 1875 to 1914, the school was led by J. Allen Holt and Martin Holt, two professors at the academy. During that period it became one of the best in North Carolina. In 1914, leadership was transferred to Thomas E. Whittaker. The same year, a fire destroyed several buildings. In 1981, the name of the school was changed to Oak Ridge Military Academy.
