Zavodske, Poltava Oblast
Zavodske (, ) is a city in Myrhorod Raion, Poltava Oblast, Ukraine. It hosts the administration of Zavodske urban hromada, one of the hromadas of Ukraine. Population: History Founded in 1928, until 1962 it was known as Stalinka before changing to Chervonozavodske (, Russian: Краснозаводское). It was the site of a large World War II tank battle involving the 2nd SS Panzer Division. Following the 2015 law on decommunization the city was renamed early February 2016 to its current name ''Zavodske''. The city is located on the terraces of the left bank of the Sula River in the forest-steppe zone of the Dnieper lowland in the north of the Poltava region - 12 km from the regional center of Lokhvitsa and 160 km from the city of Poltava. This is a complete list of cities in Ukraine. On 1 January 2022, there were 461 cities ( uk, місто, ''misto'') in Ukraine. City status is granted by the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament. The city status is only partially related to the size of a populated place in Ukraine. Smaller settlements are urban-type settlements (comparable to towns in English-speaking countries) and villages ( uk, село, ''selo''). A hromada ( uk, територіальна громада, lit=territorial community, translit=terytorialna hromada) is a basic unit of administrative division in Ukraine, similar to a municipality. It was established by the Government of Ukraine on 12 June 2020. Similar terms exist in Poland (''gromada'') and in Belarus (''hramada''). Lokhvytsia Raion ( uk, Ло́хвицький райо́н; translit.: ''Lóchvyc’kyj Rajón'') was a raion (district) in Poltava Oblast in central Ukraine. The raion's administrative center was the city of Lokhvytsia. Decommunization In Ukraine
Decommunization in Ukraine started during and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. With the success of the Revolution of Dignity in 2014, the Ukrainian government approved Ukrainian decommunization laws, laws that outlawed communist symbols. On 15 May 2015, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko signed a set of laws that started a six-month period for the removal of communist monuments (excluding World War II monuments) and renaming of public places named after communist-related themes. At the time, this meant that 22 cities and 44 villages were set to get new names. Until 21 November 2015, municipal governments had the authority to implement this; if they failed to do so, the Oblasts of Ukraine had until 21 May 2016 to change the names. 2nd SS Panzer Division
The 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich (german: 2. SS-Panzerdivision "Das Reich") or SS Division Das Reich was an elite division of the Waffen-SS of Nazi Germany during World War II, formed from the regiments of the ''SS-Verfügungstruppe'' (SS-VT). The division served during the invasion of France and took part in several major battles on the Eastern Front, including in the Battle of Prokhorovka against the 5th Guards Tank Army at the Battle of Kursk. It was then transferred to the West and took part in the fighting in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, ending the war fighting the Soviets in Hungary and Austria.
